Flashback Photo of Gibson 2010 November marks Epilepsy Awareness Month and along with my posting FiveSibes #LiveGibStrong Epi-tips, resources, books, and some fabulous Epi-Stars throughout this month, November also sees the end to Daylight Saving Time, a time for clocks to "fall back" in many areas on November 4th at 2 AM EST. So, my first important Epi-tip of the month is if your Epi-dog (dog with Epilepsy) is on specifically timed medications, you will want to adjust his schedule a few days ahead of time, or at least for the first day of the new time change, stagger the dosage times. For example, if your pet typically gets his medications at  7 AM and 7 PM, for the first day of DST, give the AM dosage at the new fall-back time of 6:30 (true time would be 7:30, a half hour later than usual), and give the 7 PM dosage at 6:30 (true time would be 7:30). That way, while their internal clock says it's a bit late, their system can adjust to the "new" t...

Woo! We here at FiveSibes l-o-v-e our vet techs at Kingston Animal Hospital ! The loving and amazing care they have always given my pets - the FiveSibes and our kitties Smokie and Binx, goes beyond a job - their care comes from their hearts! As many of you know, my boy Gibson had many special needs stemming from his Canine Epilepsy that required much extra care (laser therapy on his weak hind end, CCL tear healed through Conservative Care Treatment/Management, a suspicious growth removal, and even at the end when he was suddenly stricken with a bleeding spleen and diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma and required IV drip and medication), some of which he required in-home care and treatments as he could not be transported. Our vet techs were right there not only caring for him, but loving him as well. I could not have done all what I did without them and our fabulous vet team.   As many of you know, my beautiful 8-year-old wooly boy, Gibson, is an Epi-dog, having been diagnosed shortly after his third birthday with idopathic epilepsy. Since then, he and I have embarked upon a "Live Gib Strong K9 Epilepsy Awareness Campaign" to help others understand Epi-dogs can and do live happy, full lives. He suffers from weak hind issues for years as a result of his meds, but we work through it with laser therapy, diet, light exercise, home massage, supplements, sling harness when necessary, and this past Christmas he slipped on ice and tore a CCL, which I am treating with through Conservative Care Management and the aid of an Woundwear A-Trac Stability brace and a GingerLead Dog Support & Rehabilitation Harness.  (review to come). Love is...sharing rehab together! 'Tis the season for rehabbing Huskies here...I haven't done an update in quite some time, so I thought I'd bring everyone up to speed on what's happening here. As you recall, Chloe, who was just four years old, had double bilateral cruciate imbrication surgery last summer. She, I am happy to report, is progressing nicely! Where she had no ability to stand or walk after collapsing from a simple jump up on the bed only to discover she had shredded both hind CCLs and mensiscuses (deemed most likely from a genetic problem as she was from an irresponsible breeder). While there is a hitch to her gait now, she now can jump up on furniture, counter surf (which we discourage, however, seeing her stand up on the counter for the first time in almost a year was just wonderful! It's also Shadow Shot Sunday! Even though with the arrival of Daylight Saving Time (DST), we are losing an hour as spring approaches, the lighter days make it feel like there are more hours in the day. With it being light out later, there's more time to walk and play with our furkids, spend time with family, and uncover the BBQ grills!  The arrival of spring's DST is so welcome! It even makes work days seem shorter with more time being spent outside and at home in the  lighter evenings. I guess if we snow-loving Sibe families have to forfeit the white fluffy stuff when the warmer weather arrives, the upside of the deal is lighter "longer" days.
