Another Newsy Tuesday!

Gibson woooing his birthday and anniversary wishes!

The past two days have been special ones here for the FiveSibe's hu-parents. Yesterday was my birthday and today is my husband's and my 30th wedding anniversary! We've received tons of Husky hugs and Sibe kisses from the furkids! Now, there is so much news to share and catch up on today!

I have to share????
First, we had entered a giveaway over at All Things Dog Blog and won! Wow, it was a box of treats that arrived in the mail for the the FiveSibes, who had a blast checking it all out!

The three pupsters had lots of fun sniffing out the goods, curious as to what could be in the box!

Gibson even got a turn at sniffing the evidence.

Wooooo! It's a whole box of
 goodies that made their day!

They had a blast playing tug-o-war with the rope twist toy and couldn't get enough of the tasty Cesar softie treats!

The surprise package sure made the FiveSibes' day! Many thanks to All Things Dog! Be sure to pop over and check out some of the pawsome giveaways.

We also want to say "Thank You" to Peaceful Dog Blog for bestowing upon us the "Versatile" blogger award! Please be sure to stop by their blog and say "hi!" from the FiveSibes! Previously, we had earned two other awards we mentioned in an earlier post, the "Versatile" and also the "Insirational" blogger awards, and with all three, we need to pass them along to other bloggers we feel deserve them...and I have to say, there are just too many great blogs out there that I can not choose. I think that another blogger pal has the right idea when they received theirs, they posted that all of their fellower bloggers were deserving and should have the award bestowed upon them, so since there's no possible way to select just 15, I would like to do the same and pass it along to all my blogger pals...the awards are pasted on our sidebar, so please, feel free to copy it for your own blog as you deserve it! To accept the blog, we do need to tell you seven things about us, so please visit our past Newsy Tuesday post from July to check out that info! And truly, and "wooooo-ly" we are so touched by the award and sincerely appreciate receiving it!

A couple weeks ago we entered a bid for a necklace over at the Crossed Paws blog to raise funds to help pets in need. We were so pleased to find out that we had won our bid for a very unique pawprint necklace offered by Road Dog Tales...and our beautiful necklace designed by Deanne arrived the other day and it has FiveSibes engraved on the flipside and is just beautiful! And check out that classy packaging! Love it! Please be sure to stop over and visit Road Dog Tales and check out Deanne's fabulous metal designs, and tell her FiveSibes sent you!

As you may have seen in an earlier, post, last week we headed over to the U.K. for an absolutely awesome virtual book launch party by Carol Wyer for Miniskirts and Laughter Lines. Well, our Miss Chloe, decked out in her requested mini-skirt, traveled many miles by land, air, and sea, to join in the party fun and was greeted so warmly by Carol and her guests! They do know how to throw a party! She even got to bring home a doggie bag!  :-)  For some fun and lots of laughs (and you'll see Chloe there on the mini-skirt contest "winners" page), pop over to Facing50WithHumor blog and be sure to tell Carol that the @FiveSibesMom sent you!

Sun Shiny Shadow Shot Sunday Sing-a-Long

I Can See Clearly Now
~Johnny Nash

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

I think I can make it now, the pain is gone

All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I’ve been prayin' for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

Look all around, there’s nothin' but blue skies

Look straight ahead, nothin' but blue skies

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,

I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

It's National Dog Week! Time to Celebrate & Appreciate Our Best Friends

"Woooo, guys, it's National Dog Week!"
Even though every day here at our house it is a "dog day," this week does mark the official National Dog Week, a great time to reflect back on our dogs' lives (as in our photo here when Wolf was a pup!) and just how much joy they bring to us each and every day. So what's a holiday without a celebration???

Last year's blog we had fun celebrating, and now it's the perfect excuse again to don some party hats, cue up the music, order in some pizza or BBQ up some yummy food to share with your furkids, and don't forget the vanilla ice cream cake! Any holiday is an official cause to celebrate with our FiveSibes!

But, before we get too carried away with partying...here's a very interesting National Dog Week Blog, by author Lisa Begin-Kruysman, to check out some great facts, trivia, art, and points about the origins of the week. You can also check out the National Dog Week Facebook page.

According to Express News' pet columnist Cathy Rosenthal, the founding forefathers of National Dog Week created seven objectives in 1928 for National Dog Week that still hold true today:
  1. A good home for every dog.
  2. Elimination of stray dogs from the street
  3. Better-informed dog owners
  4. Consideration for dogs and all animals
  5. Emphasis of the dog’s use as companion and protector
  6. Fair laws for dogs and dog owners
  7. Respect for the rights of non-dog owners

So during this official week of the dog, may all of us pet parents recommit ourselves to the reasons we brought furkids into our homes and lives and remember that they love us unconditionally...as we should love them. Let's all give our furbabies a big heartfelt "thank you" for their love, patience, devotion, and undying loyalty (with an extra hefty side dose of kisses!)

This is also a perfect time to visit lonely shelter dogs and brighten their day, and to also remind ourselves that if we witness a pet being abused or neglected to report it so that the animal may have a chance at a forever happy home and knowing what love and being a dog is really all about.

I hear the music...I hear the wooing...it's time to start celebrating! Oh, I see my happy Huskies have already started...without me!

Happy National Dog Week!

    Of Rainbows, Sunsets, and Roos

Earlier tonight, the sky here was simply amazing...a gorgeous sunset and breathtaking double rainbow, with one being a full arc across our river. My daughter and I were walking to our car when we were treated to nature's spectacular show of beauty. We truly felt like we had witnessed something great. We were equipped with our camera phones only, but very thankful for modern technology and someone having the good smarts to include a phone! We hope you enjoy the video and our wishes for a great kickstart to an even better weekend!

    Happy Friday!

A Tribute to the Canine Heroes of 9/11

Today marks the tenth anniversary of 9/11. It's hard to believe that the day all of our lives were forever changed is a decade old. Newborns are now entering middle school. Five-year-olds are now high school students, and high school students are now college graduates, many with careers and families of their own. While time has certainly marched on, that fateful day will never be forgotten. For the families who lost loved ones, for the rescue workers, volunteers, and canines with their handlers who all responded to the calls for help...this blog is dedicated to you. Thank you for your endurance and dedication. We will never forget.

Deservingly so, there will be a ceremony today honoring these K9 heroes, many who have since crossed the Rainbow Bridge, while those who are elderly and now retired from duty, will be in attendance at the tribute held across the river from lower Manhattan, organized by the non-profit Tails of Hope Foundation. Many appreciative woos and thank yous go out to these brave canines.
For more information on honoring the Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs, check out the Finding One Another: Courage Beyond Measure  and the Search Dog Foundation websites.
Also check out an article in on the SARs published in The Scoop: Dogs in the News just four days after the 2001 attack, Environmental Graffiti Magazine's photos of the SARs, including FEMA's Urban Search and Rescue teams, and the AKC's DogNY tribute to SARs.

The Connecticut Police Work Dog Association has a page of amazing K9 memorials, including this life-size sculpture of a German Sheperd moving down an eight-foot I-beam with vest and booties going toward a crushed New York City firefighter's helmet. The sculpture, according to the CPWDA, consists of recovered materials from Ground Zero and is part of a 9/11 Memorial Garden at SUNY Farmingdale in New York.

A book that is part of my personal collection is the hauntingly beautiful book Dog Heroes of September 11th; A Tribute to America’s Search and Rescue Dogs by Nona Kilgore Bauer. Click here for a photo slideshow of these heroic canines. This book pays tribute to the heroic canines and their dedication, determination, and hard work during that tragic period of time. According to the publisher’s statement on the book jacket, “Kennel Club Books supports the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (NDSDF) in its mission to produce certified search and rescue teams to protect our whole nation. A portion of the proceeds of Dog Heroes of September 11th will benefit the NDSDF.”

"If these dogs only knew what a difference they make. Certainly, there's nothing that can replace
    the precision of a dog's nose—and absolutely
nothing that can replace a dog's heart."
Bob Sessions, rescue worker, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

    We will never forget.

It's Back to School Time...is Your Pet Ready?

    Bandit is ready for school!
Even though we have a few more weeks left until summer is officially over, Back-to-School season really winds down the summer for many. With all the business of shopping for school items and drives to settle college kids into their dorms,  try not to forget the furkids in all of the excitement. After spending all summer playing and lazing around with the family, the excitement of back-to-school can translate into stress for our family pets. To help pets adjust to the sudden empty-house syndrome, try preparing them a few days before. Here are just a few tips:

Gibson doesn't want to trade the pool for school yet!

    • If your dog is now going to be alone all day, do a sample run-through of what the new typical work/school day will be. By doing this with your dog a few days before, it will let your pet become accustomed to the new routine before the new routine actually starts.
    • Let  your dog escort your child with you to the bus stop, the corner, or ride along in the car if you drive your child to school.
    • Keep the mood upbeat. We know how dogs pick up on our moods and energies.
    • Let your children tell their furbaby that they will be back after school to play. They really do understand.
    • Let the radio or TV play while everyone is away so your dog hears voices and doesn’t feel alone.
    • Call in from the office periodically to leave happy voice messages for your dog.
    • Treat your canine to a "doggie" snack when your child has his/her after-school snack. After all, who doesn’t bond well when food is involved!
    • Let your child read/study with the dog nearby.
    • If your child moves away for college and your house is now an empty nest, you will need to fill the lonely spot your family dog will naturally feel. Some additional hugs, kisses, and extra evening walks will work wonders. There’s no better cure for the blues (for both human and canine) than spending some time together!
    • Consider bringing another pet into the house for your furbaby’s companion. Or, if you can’t, why not foster a dog from a nearby shelter or rescue and bring him/her home for some visits and company with your furkid. It will be greatly beneficial to both!

School is not all work, and no play. It can be fun too! Fellow blogger furpal Sarge, along with several other bloggers got together to hold a really cool Back-to-School Bash that featured some pretty pawsome “classes”…be sure to check out their blogs listed on Sarge’s site for a great school review!. We participated in SAS’s Bug/Crawly House so see if you can find our icky pics!

Please remember, with the arrival of school days, drive careful, be sure to watch out for the hu-kids walking, stop for those school buses, and keep an extra eye on your furkids to be sure they don’t slip out the open doors as the kids leave for and return from school!

    Happy Back-to-School time!

Let the Sun Shine In on Shadow Shot Sunday

My daughter captured this amazing moment of Chloe framed by the morning sun after she stepped out of the house and into the sunshine the day after Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene blew through.
    by Will Munter
    "Sunshine hue sunshine grew
Shines its rays on me and you
    Sunshine light sunshine bright
Not a dark cloud close in sight
    Sunshine thrive sunshine imbibe
Sweet healing rays on all your tribe
    Sunshine healing sunshine feeling
Its the essence of our being
    Sunshine parade sunshine displayed
    In its fractualized brocade
    Sunshine tranced sunshine danced
Gives our souls such sweet romance
    Sunshine dove sunshine above
Thanks for your sweet rays o love
    so sunkissed and pure sun-blissed
Sunshine blocks out all the mist
    So sunshine mellow sunshine yellow
You've made me a lucky fellow."

    Happy Sunday, Everyone!

    Labor Day weekend!
