Together Again for Burgers on a #FlashbackFriday!

Flashback Photo: My full FiveSibes pack family, September 2015

I love this photo, and the memory more! It brings me right back to that moment in time as though it were yesterday. I remember coming home with burgers for my FiveSibes, and even before I stepped outside, those super sniffers knew I had food! Even with all their excitement, they always were a very polite pack and waited patiently for me to give them the chow-down OK! Chloe was the sweetest of the pack, but also the loudest when it came to food and definitely the pack chow hound! Notice she is front and center to that burger! When I took this pic, I loved it immediately because their personalities and love of food really shined through! My dear FiveSibes, together again, even if for just a moment.

So, if life throws you a burger, eat (and enjoy) it!

Canine Cooking Corner: Autumn Apples!

Wolf: "Hey, Bandit, hu-mom left her apple unattended! Let's get some licks in."

Bandit: "Nommm...hurry up, Wolfie. I think I hear hu-mom coming back."

FiveSibesMom: "Ahem. Did you guys lick that apple?"

Silence...with two sets of blue eyes (not-so-innocently) staring at me in Husky denial.

This past weekend dawned with brilliant folliage on the trees further up north from us. So, during a lovely drive through what looked like a beautiful Autumn painting, we spotted a cute little roadside orchard that bright orange pumpkins piled in the back of an old red International pickup, and inside was a cooler full of fresh-picked, large apples! We chose a bag of Honeycrisps, and they were hands-down the best apples we or our Huskies ever took a bite of! No wonder Wolfie and Bandit were tempted to a few licks of my apple!

Did you know...?

Apples are healthy treats for dogs either as an addition to a homemade treat, or even fresh apple bits? (Just be sure to never give your dog the apple core or seeds! Those (and leaves) can be toxic to dogs, cats, and horses according to the ASPCA toxic plant list. Be sure to throw them away where your dog cannot get to them)!

Looking for some healthy apple treats for your dog? Check out this YUMMY doggie version of apple crisp, compliments of our friend Jessica from the famous Gone to the Snow Dogs kitchen!

And, Jessica also whips up some doggylicious dehydrated apple chips for the snow dogs, too! Can you say, "wooooo?!"

Many thanks to Jessica and her Snow Dogs for the great apple recipes! Be sure to check out their award-winning GTTSD YouTube channel for a lot more siberlicious recipes!

So while the weather is gorgeous and the apples are tasty and ripe, why not head out and get a bag or bushel from your nearest orchard? Your dogs will thank you! Don't forget your mask and some hand sanitizer!

BED REVIEW:

Furhaven Pet - Plush Orthopedic Sofa, L-Shaped Chaise Couch

We like the Furhaven beds here at FiveSibes! When these beds arrive, they are in a vacuum sealed bag and need 24 hours to get their shape, so don't be alarmed at how they first look bumpy! I'm used to it as I have had Furhavens in the past. They are a nice light weight bed, so not hard to move around, yet they stay put! This is not a heavy duty style bed, but out of all the beds I've had, my Huskies seem happy with them and don't rip them up! For the price, which is not expensive compared to others I've purchased, they hold up well (if you don't have a bed ripper)! If you are looking for a heavy duty bed, this is not the one for you. But for us, we replace their beds each season, so the style and price makes these a nice comfy spot for my Huskies to chill out on.

Senior "pups
ters" now, I opt for theorthopedic foam to give their
aging joints comfort. Bandit and Wolfie relax on them and lo
ve the chaise style, which is bumper cushions on two sides, and open on two sides so they can cuddle or stretch out. I purchased the Large, which is perfect for how my Huskies (67 and 69 lbs) like to sleep. Some may prefer the Giant size for more space, but Wolfie and Bandit do fine with Large. (Images of sizes and interior are from Amazon).

There is also an assortment of colors and styles, but I chose the two-tone Stone Gray to match our house. I use these as an outdoor deck bed, but definitely bring them in as they are plush! They can
certainly be wonderful indoor beds (as my previous ones were). If you'd like to get one, I have posted the Amazon link below!

Remembering Our Beautiful Queen, Harley ❤️

Flashback: Our Beautiful FiveSibes alpha queen "Harley" ~ October 2018

Time is indeed surreal. One year ago, on September 13th, on a beautiful sunny pre-Autumn day, our beautiful beloved Nanuk "Harley" Mari, our FiveSibes alpha queen, earned her furangel wings at home, in her favorite place--in our yard out on our deck, with her hu-family and fur family beside her.

Our family's first Siberian Husky, my daughter's beloved dog, Harley was an absolutely amazing girl. She knew just how beautiful she was, too! Super smart, she ruled the Husky roost at our house! Harley was full of sass and spunk, and could chase her tail until the sun set! She loved Fetch! and never wanted us to stop playing! She accepted every Husky we added to our family after her, becoming Gibson's true love (oh, was he ever smitten with her!), and a wonderful "momma" to the three pupsters Wolfie, Chloe, and Bandit when we brought them home.

This beauty queen could at times be "Snarley Harley" when she needed some quiet time of her own, but always loved her pack family and would snuggle up with them. She howled proudly on top of her lungs, out of tune to the point neighbors once thought she was injured! The pack would woo and bark at her until she howled first. Then they would join in the chorus, but never without her leading them in song. Her favorite things were running in the snow in the winter and splashing in the pool in the summer! In my daughter's words, "She was the most bad-ass dog ever."

When she grew older and went deaf, you'd never know it. She understood sign language perfectly! I had always thought Harley would live really long, and while we were blessed to have her for 14-and-a-half years, it's just never long enough.

Harley loved life, her pack family, and us ~ and oh, how we loved her. There will never be another dog like her. Always a part of our hearts, we miss our girl dearly.

On this one year anniversary of her earning that silver harness, may she and Gibson and pupster Chloe be having some fun zoomies, and be snuggling up together, in those forever snowy fields, north of the Rainbow Bridge, all the while feeling our infinite love.

Thank you for all the joy, fun, and love you brought us. We miss and love you for aways, Momma Har.

“I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time? The misery of keeping a dog is his dying so soon. But, to be sure, if he lived for fifty years and then died, what would become of me?”
~Sir Walter Scott

"Southern Siberian Rescue is a group of dedicated volunteers responsibly rescuing Siberian Huskies in need throughout North Carolina and surrounding states. Our sole purpose and priority is to help unwanted, misunderstood, abandoned or neglected Siberians find homes. We do this by providing needed health care, rehabilitation and training for all our foster dogs and carefully screening potential adopters.

The Siberian Husky is not a breed for everyone and adopters need to understand this breed and all of its quirks and beauty. We also spend a great deal of time educating potential owners and the public about the Siberian Husky, their special requirements, temperament, personalities and traits. We promote the importance of adopting from a reputable rescue or working with a responsible breeder when inviting a Siberian to your home."
