Reiki - A Dog's Journey Toward Alternative Healing

Image
Gibson getting ready for his distance Reiki treatment A s many of you know, I recently held an auction for Canine Epilepsy Awareness. One of the many items so generously donated was a 30-minute Reiki session with animal massage therapist and Reiki practitioner Marta Banat of All Paws Massage in Vancouver, Canada, who as you recall, was also my wonderful guest speaker on “The Sibe Vibe” back in August.   I bid on the session – and was thrilled when I won! Marta's room in Canada.   Now I’ve always been intrigued by the practice of Reiki. I have a friend who became a practitioner years ago, before alternative therapies such as this were in the spotlight, and I always wondered about it. Quite honestly, when she told me what she did, and explained she healed through her hands, I thought it was a bit, well, hokey. But, fast forward about five years. Gibson has his first seizure, and then five more a month later and was put on anti-seizure meds. Then, three years ago ab...

Update on Gibson: Lovin' Life!

Update on Gibson: Today was Gibson's in-home K-LaserUSA therapy treatment and he had lots of kisses for one of his fave vet techs. After a little rest, we took a brief walk and relaxed together on the front lawn. He can only walk a very short distance, but this is such a huge achievement, it just swells my heart!  Back story for folks who may not know: Gibson lives with weak hind end issues as a side effect of his epilepsy meds, and Christmas Eve he slipped on ice during a snow storm and went down, became lame, and has CCL tears. He was on meds, in a leg brace, a lift harness, supplements, and continuous in-home laser treatments. After a month-and-a-half, the leg brace came off (okay, he chewed it off), and we have continued with the lift-harness and laser herapy sessions. To view previous posts on Gibson's journey, visit HERE , and a little later on HERE . Just a few weeks ago we hit a big milestone as he was ready to start on brief solo walks sans harness! ...

A New Journey: Conservative Care Treatment for Gibson's Cruciate Tear

Shortly before Gibson's birthday, my beautiful boy and I have embarked upon a new journey. Right around Christmas, he had started to limp from what we initially thought was a soft tissue injury from being active now that his Epi-meds were reduced (see story on Bromide toxicity incident ). He soon started favoring the leg and then couldn't put any weight on it at all. He began to work around it and even was able to run as a tripawd, with the injured paw held up and close to his body. We did an Xray to rule out any hip or other issues...but he could not use his leg. He went on an anti-inflammatory for a week with continued in-home K-Laser treatments (we really do have the best vet team!) However, even after receiving a number of treatments, it didn't seem to get any better indicating that the injury is different than what we first suspected. One of my wonderful vet's came to do a house call and upon examing Gibson, and with his Xrays, determined he had a cruciate li...
