An Unexpected Christmas Eve

Please join us in a #pawcircle of healing and prayer for my boy Gibson. We had a very scary Christmas Eve...a sudden snow squall happened that at first was beautiful, but it turned icy very quickly, like in seconds. While outside with the furbabies, my boy Gibson slipped in the icy snow and went down crying. He could not walk and we did get him back inside by semi-carrying him (he is 95 pounds of wooly Husky!). He needs assistance with a sling to go "out" as he can not walk on his own. It appears to me that he may have torn his other CCL (he tore his left one last year and we were advised that he could blow out his other in a year or so, and it's been a little over a year). As most of you know, he is a canine epileptic, and has had a weak hind end for years as a result of meds, which adds to my concern. It is unclear at this point whether it is indeed a cruciate issue, even though does appear to be, and if he will ultimately need a double surgery on his back legs. He is on pain meds now and I have been in conference with our wonderful vet, Woundwear, and the folks on the Canine Epilepsy Resources EPIL-K9 list since Christmas Eve and everyone has just been so supportive and helpful. I will keep everyone posted on my boy as we progress. Your prayers, positive thoughts, and healing energies are all very welcome and very, very much appreciated.

Harley has not left Gibson's side since his accident. She sleeps with him on his bed every night. Above she rests her head almost protectively over his bad leg.

Even Bandit, our resident wild child, has been out of sorts since Gibson fell. She was the one out in the yard running and flying like the wind in the snow, even jumping over Gibson, when he decided to get up and run with her, and they were partially hidden from my view from the deck, but I believe when he went to get up and run, he slipped on the slick icy snow. I think she feels it's somehow her fault, and we've even told her it isn't...but, she was also running with Wolf when he got hurt, and now Gibson. Poor girl has a case of the blues simply because she was just simply doing what Huskies love to do, fly, and play in the snow.

And as the saying goes, "When it rains, it pours," and it apparently is pouring quite a bit here. Our Chloe, above, has developed what appears to be an interdigital cyst or tumor on her paw. She is currently on antibiotics, tea bag soaks, and has to go back in a week for an Xray if there is no improvement to be sure it's not a tumor.

Harley is back in her brace after overdoing it in the snow...this past spring she hurt her leg by acting like a puppy and spinning after her tail 10 pupazillion times resulting in a rotating tear of her cruciate. Thankfully, the brace is giving her the support she needs, and along with rest (with truly is a four-letter word to a Siberian Husky), she seems to be recuperating...again! Here she's relaxing under the Christmas tree with Wolf.

And how's Wolf, you may ask? He is doing very well post-surgery on Halloween for his blown cruciate. He has energy and is now putting almost full weight on his leg. Of couse, he is spoiled and just loves bed hopping from the living room to the bedroom and back. And he is my shadow...since his surgery, he is literally under my feet or right next to me. If I get up 10 times, he will look or follow me. But I love it. He is well and on the mend, and I couldn't be happier!

With Gibson's accident and all the various stages of rehabbing going on here, we may be off the grid for a bit and hope everyone will excuse us...and please don't forget about us! We will be back! I have Christmas updates to post, but they will be a little late. I will in between try to stop by and visit blogs, but if I don't comment for a while, please know I will try to catch up! I will be doing periodic status updates on our furkids on our open Facebook community page, too, and you don't have to be on Facebook to read along as we keep our page open. Just check in on us HERE.

Thank you for all your thoughts, prayers, and positive energies coming this way...they mean the world to us.

Merry Christmas! Time for a Sleigh Ride!

From our FiveSibes Family to yours, "We wish you a Merry Christmas! We Wish you a Merry Christmas! We wish you
a Merry Christmas! And a Happy New Year!"

A special thanks to my FiveSibes™ illustrator, the very talented Michelle Littler, for the above wonderful holiday illustration! (A little secret...we are working on a FiveSibes™ Tale Christmas book for 2014! Woo!) You can check out some of Michelle's other fabulous work on her littletoad store on Etsy HERE.

And keeping with the theme of a sleigh ride...we'd like to leave you with our very special Christmas Sleigh Ride video from last year, where furpals from across the globe hopped on Santa's sleigh with us...we're sure you'll recognize more than a few beautiful furry faces, a few who are now angels and watching over us from above. So grab yourself some hot cocoa, some treats for the furkids, snuggle up together on the sofa, turn up the volume, and enjoy! I can hear those sleigh bells jing-jing-jing-a-ling right now...

Merry Christmas!

It's Christmas Eve! Santa Came!

This is a flashback to last year, but we just love it when Santa Paws came and visited our FiveSibes and how excited they were to see him (ahem - her, Kat, one of the wonderful receptionists at our vet's office!) that we just had to share again! We hope all our furpals and their families are having a wonderful Christmas Eve and that Santa Paws is very good to all! And don't forget to take a few minutes to play "Santa" by visiting your local shelter or rescue sometime during the holiday season to bring some cheer (and treats and toys) to homeless dogs who could use some cheering up this holiday season until they have a family of their own!

Ho! Ho! Ho!

We've Got Christmas Mail! We Sent Christmas Mail! We Are Wishing and Waiting for Santa!

Wolf and Gibson very excited about seeing who all sent us cards! We enjoy seeing them fill our mailbox with cheer! We just love looking at all the beautiful photos and season's greetings! And we can't wait to put them all up on our wall to admire! (We did have a little mishap with our Post Office as apparently a few cards were sent back by accident when a temporary clerk filled in and didn't realize Harley, Gibson, Wolf, Chloe, Bandit, and kitty Binx were the FiveSibes, so the cards were returned to sender. Boo. We have been assured that all is corrected, so we hope if your card was returned, maybe you'd consider resending it. And we thank our Blogger pal for pointing it out right away to me so I could have the Post Office clerk correct it immediately. What a time of year to have mail returned!)

Elf Wolf is busy taking a little snooze (and Santa Paws is watching through his magic mirror to see how nice Wolf is helping me) after I finally finished filling out and sending our Christmas cards to our furpals as part of the annual Blogger Christmas Card Exchange! Stamping and licking the envelopes sure can be hard work, and Sibe Elf surely needs a little rest! We love sending and receiving cards from all our special furfriends! And we save them all!

Gibson from last year with all our wonderful gorgeous cards from all of you! Can't wait to put up this year's!

Harley loves our decorations, especially this handcrafted lighted Siberian Husky in a doghouse I won in a rescue auction. A very nice addition to our holiday decor!

The boys were such a wonderful help with wrapping, too! And, of course, need a little Sibe snooze when they were done!

Bandit checking that all the stockings were hung on the stair rail with care...

Chloe and Wolf busied themselves taking little snoozes while waiting for the jolly ol' Elf himself to arrive!

"Woooo! What was that? Gib! Did you hear that? Could it be..?!"

Flashback (Friday) of Christmas Past

Just five days to go before Christmas! Here's a photo of our beautiful alpha queen "Harley" just sitting and waiting for Christmas morning gift giving to begin! Flashback to circa 2010.

When we recall Christmas past, we

usually find that the simplest things

-not the great occasions - give off the

 greatest glow of happiness.

It's the Dog Crazy Meet the Bloggers Getting to Know You Blog Hop! Come on By!

For today's post, I'm joining in "Meet the Bloggers," a fabulous networking and "get to know the blogger behind the pet" event! At the end of this post is a list of today's hosts, so I hope you'll be sure to pop over and visit their blogs, as well as all the "hoppers!"

First up, they asked for a photo, so here's one my daughter shot of me on my birthday this year with my five Siberian Huskies, for which this blog is named after!

My FiveSibes & I: Harley, Gibson, Chloe, Wolf & Bandit

These are questions we were asked to answer so all those who are joining in the hop can get visit and get to know each other outside of our furkids! We were asked to answer a selection of questions and these some I thought I'd chat about!

Meet the Bloggers (MtB): What’s your favorite non-animal related book?
FiveSibesMom (FSM): I have many! However, I did love The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. (Yes, I know there were dogs in it...but it was not technically a dog book!)

MtB: What’s your favorite holiday?
FSM: Christmas!

MtB: Favorite meal?
FSM: Oh, hands down it's the Thanksgiving Day feast! I love turkey and stuffing and sweet potato pie, garlic smashed potatoes, my daughter's paprika potatoes (I love potato dishes, can't you tell!) and cranberry sauce...I just love it all! Even better? The next day leftover turky, stuffing, and cranberry sandwich! Oh, yes, and leftover pumpkin pie or apple crisp for breakfast with a hot mug of flavored coffee (pumpkin!) Yummmmm!

MtB: What do you like to do in your free time?

FSM: Because I am a writer and photographer by trade and am usually almost always doing both, I like to do things that can relax my mind, recharge my creativity, and are good for the soul. I love to just relax with my daughter and the Huskies and catch up on some DVR'd TV shows while the dogs sleep all around us, or grab a coffee to go and jump in the car with my daughter and just drive around to no where in particular while talking and listening to the radio. Or, sit by the pool or out in the snow with a coffee and the Huskies and just absorb the beautiful day and fresh air! Good times!

MtB: What one word would people who know you use to describe you?

FSM:  I hope "caring."

MtB: If your pets could talk, what one word would THEY use to describe you?

FSM: Hmmm....not one word, but they'd probably say I'm a great mom who loves them very much and takes great care of them...but, I could be a little more generous with the nom-noms!

MtB: What is one thing you’ve done that you’re most proud of? FSM: Having and raising my amazing daughter. Watching her grow up from a beautiful child and become the beautiful, intelligent, compassionate woman she is today is my greatest pride!

MtB: If you could change one thing about your life what would it be?

FSM: Normally, I'd say not one thing. I'm blessed to have the wonderful life I have, with it's joys and sorrows, ups and downs...But that said, I'd really like to reduce to eliminate something I was diagnosed a few years ago, Rheumatoid Arthritis. It came on suddenly after two sudden serious surgeries. I watched my mom battle Osteo arthritis and admired how she does so. With RA, I'm having to rethink how I do things as my joints fail, become inflamed and constantly in a degree of pain, including my hands, the tools of my trade...and while I am doing all I can to be the strongest and best I can be, some days it is very difficult. The mind says "You can do it!" like always, but the body says, "Um, hold on, we can't any more." It's painful, it's debilitating, it's limiting. I have to think about little things now like how can I pick up that glass without dropping it? Or how can I put my socks on? Will I be able to take the Huskies for a walk? So, I'd have to say I'd like to remove RA from my life if I could...however, I know there are folks out there fighting health battles where there are no therapies to while it is difficult and it is serious...I know others have graver difficulties that I am blessed not to have. Plus, now, I network with other folks who have RA and hopefully join others in shining a light on a more holistic approach to battling it.

MtB: Other than blogging, what are three things you do that bring you joy?

FSM: My daughter, she's also my very best friend and everything has so much more meaning when we do things together! She's my go-to gal and such an amazing person. My family (including my Huskies and cat) make me smile and laugh every day! And while this will make it four things, my writing and photography go hand-in-hand for me. I love to see the world through the lens of my camera and then write about what I've seen!

MtB: What drives you nuts about your pets?

FSM: Not one thing. They are a constant source of love, happiness, silliness, and pleasure!

MtB: What melts your heart?
FSM; Everything! Especially when they gaze at me with their blue eyes and snuggle as close as they can get to me...their love and devotion just melts my heart, everyday.

Well, that's enough about me! I'm going to enjoy visiting others blogs and getting to know all a bit better! I will return you to your regularly scheduled news about the FiveSibes!

Before I sign off, I'd like to personally thank our hosts for this wonderful "meet-n-greet" event:

ASPCA "What Not to Buy? Pet Store Puppies!" Video, Holiday Pet Gift Guide, and a Holiday Giveaway!

Gibson here! Hu-Mom has an important holiday message!
With the holiday fast approaching, you may know of some folks who are thinking about getting their family a puppy for Christmas...we'd like to join in the with the SPCA and say don't buy a puppy from a pet store! Pet stores = puppy mills. Instead, why not visit your local SPCA, shelter, or rescue and check out the wonderful dogs just waiting for someone to love. There will be no Santa coming for them this year. No stockings with their names on them hung with care. No fuzzy toys, tasty bones, or healthy snacks all waiting under a tree for them. No family to say "Merry Christmas!" to them and lavish them with kisses while holiday music plays in the background. But we can make a difference! And if you can't adopt, consider fostering, sponsoring, or even just visiting your shelter or rescue this season to walk, play, and donate some goodies to. We can all make homeless pets have a bright holiday season.

We'd like to share the ASPCA's video "What Not to Buy? Pet Store Puppies!" in the hope that we can join in getting the message out.

The ASPCA also has a Holiday Gift Guide that has lots of great ideas, and they encourage shoppers not to buy anything at stores that sell puppies in the hopes of educating consumers about the connection between pet store puppies and puppy mills.

The ASPCA also has fun gift ideas for do-it-yourself enthusiasts or just those trying to cut back on costs, ASPCA behavior experts have put together the following fun suggestions:
  • To make a tasty chew toy, soak a rope toy in chicken broth and then freeze. Once frozen, give the toy to your dog for hours of savory chewing.
  • For cats, fill plastic Easter eggs with wet cat food as a fun food puzzle.

  • Rinse out an empty, cardboard milk carton, fill it with dry pet food and poke holes for a food-dispensing puzzle toy.
There's also lots of other gift ideas on their online store at ASPCA, so check it out! And if you would like to make an "honor gift" to help homeless pets in the ASPCA, you may do so HERE.

To say "Thank You" for helping to share their video and message of "What Not to Buy? Pet Store Puppies!" video, the ASPCA is offering a Holiday Gift Pack for one lucky winner! The gift pack contains:
ASPCA 5-Piece Gift Set
·         Walker’s Shortbread Cookies
·         ASPCA Orange Tote
·         Fight Cruelty Wristband
·         Cat Ears Hat
·         2014 Animal Calendar
·         Kitten play toy
·         Dog holiday hat

Just complete the Rafflecopter below and we will hold the drawing on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20th at 12AM EST! We will post the lucky winner's name in a post here and on our FiveSibes: Siberian Husky K9 News & Reviews Facebook page (it's an open pubic community page, so you don't need to have a Facebook account to check us out!) What a great gift pack for you (or a friend) and a  favorite pet!

Rallying Siberian Husky Lovers! Vote to Get the Husky into the Top AKC "12 Breeds of Christmas" Top Spot!

Woooo! We are pretty excited that through all the voting, the Siberian Husky breed has been selected as one of the American Kennel Club's "12 Breeds of Christmas!"

Now...AKC is looking to choose THE top breed of Christmas by posting a different breed each day from now until December 23 and on December 12...the voting is open for one day only just for the Siberian Husky!

Just visit the AKC Facebook page HERE, look for the post with the Siberian Husky and "like" it, leave a comment something like "Go Huskies!" or "Siberian Huskies are #1!" and then share the link with all your Siberian Husky loving friends!  We only have one day to get all our votes, comments, and likes in on that one post, so be sure to set your alarms!

This contest by the AKC is all for fun, but just how perfect is it to have a snow dog like the Siberian Husky, a born sled dog, be the "AKC's #1 Breed of Christmas?" After all, Huskies were bred to pull sleds...or Santa's!

Gibson and our lawn Huskies are all ready for the Siberian Husky to be named AKC #1 Christmas breed!

Sponsor A Husky This Christmas and Bring Some Holiday Cheer to a Homeless Husky!

"Shhhhh, this is a surprise Christmas box for our sponsor-a-Husky brother, Bruce!"

We are very excited to have a sixth Sibe join us this holiday season...we are sponsoring a rescue Siberian Husky this year and hope to bring some howliday cheer to him!

Meet Bruce! Isn't he just beautiful?!

Bruce is currently residing at the Siberian Husky Emergency Lifeline (S.H.E.L.L.) waiting for his loving, forever family. While he waits, S.H.E.L.L. wanted to be sure he, and other Huskies at his rescue, have a very happy holiday season...and they can! You can sponsor a Husky, just like we did, and make his or her or their Christmas season bright and merry, until they can be part of a forever family by sponsoring them and then going shopping and picking out some toys, treats, and items that will brighten their holiday!

When you volunteer to sponsor a Husky, S.H.E.L.L. will send you your sponsor Husky's photo and some info about what he/she likes to help make your shopping easier! Then, you can either arrange to drop off the gift(s) if you live in the area, or, you can arrange to mail the package and make a Sibe season bright!

S.H.E.L.L. is a non-profit organization located in Ohio that rescues Siberian Huskies from high-kill shelters where the Huskies are then rehabilitated and then available for adoption to loving, forever families. The mission of the S.H.E.L.L. Fund is to educate the public about the Siberian Husky breed and advocate for adopting rather than buying.

To sponsor a Husky this Christmas please visit S.H.E.L.L. HERE. and be sure to let them know FiveSibes sent you over, and bring some howliday cheer this year to Husky without a home!

Wolf's Surprise Get Well Package

"Woooo...a packaged for me???!!"
Nothing brings a smile to a Husky's face (other than snow) than a box of treats and toys! As you know, my boy Wolf blew out his CCL last month and had to undergo cruciate imbrication surgery. He is definitely on the mend, and his incision has healed nicely, and a soft coating of white fuzz is now covering his surgery shaved leg. He is starting to put some weight on it and we just received the green light from the surgeon to allow him to walk for five minutes when he goes out on his potty breaks now! He is still on strict bed rest inside and on leash walks only, but we are on our way to healing. We are half way three weeks, we do a follow-up and find out how he is progressing.

We have received many wonderful Emails, comments, notes, prayers, power of the paw vibes, and cards... and so appreciate each and every one of them. Today, we want to say "thanks" for a very special care package from Holly and the Huskies:

"Mom! There are noms in here!"

A surprise package arrived for Wolf the other day from his "Auntie" Holly and her five beautiful Huskies - Ariel, Nala, Timber, Boo, and Chip. He must have caught their scent because Wolf knew immediately this was a box for him!

"Nom, nom, nom...."

"Nom, nom...yummmm!"

"And toys!!!"

"Thank wooo SO much for my Get Well presents and card
Auntie Holly, Ariel, Nala, Boo, Timber, and Chip! You made me feel so much better!"
Wolf all tuckered out after opening his (p)awesome gifts!
(see his peach fuzz?!)
