The bond between a family pet and child is indeed a special one. But, when the pet passes, or its time is near, it can be so heartbreaking, and especially for children who in addition to being sad, may also be confused and/or scared. 
 
Explaining the death of a beloved pet is a heartbreaking and very sensitive topic to broach with a child, and I hope Wolfie, What is the Rainbow Bridge? will help families deal with that grief. It is not a religious book, but does talk about the Rainbow Bridge being "heaven for dogs" as well as briefly talking about the northern lights, stars, snow (for the Huskies), and of course, rainbows as signs that our beloved pets may send us to let us know they are okay. Prior to publishing this book, I contacted several people who work in the pet fields and with children—including a pediatrics team, Therapy Dog handlers, grief specialist, and those in the veterinary and medical fields—in order to get their thoughts on the book before publishing, and have shared them further down in this post.

Wolfie, What is the Rainbow Bridge? is a very special book for me, personally, for several reasons. First, I wrote it with input from my grandson (❤️) as he was best friends with Wolfie right up until Wolfie earned his furangel wings. This was a project near and dear to my heart in addition to it being about the magical bond between a boy and his dog, it also stars the last of our FiveSibes, pupster and my baby boy of the pack, Wolfie. The photo illustrations are my creations, plus...as I do with all of my books, a portion of the profits will be donated toward helping homeless shelter Huskies. So a superfecta of specialness! 

While this book stars a dog, its message is one for all beloved pets—dogs, cats, bunnies, horses, birds, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, sheep, goats, cows, etc., because The Rainbow Bridge's gates are open to all animals.

#PrayersForHarley - Dewclaw Tumor

Dewclaws. Such an unnecessary evil for a dog. In August, I noticed Harley limping. At 11-and-a-half, she is a bit stiff-legged at times from arthritis, but this was a more pronounced limp and she was having an extra tough time sitting down. She seemed very uncomfortable. She was also becoming a bit snarley, especially when I was touching her paw, which is something that never typically bothers her. Upon further checking, I noticed an odd lump around her dewclaw on her right leg, thinking it was possibly a pulled dewclaw, maybe a splinter, thistle, or even a bee sting , she became extremely agitated when I touched it.    (Warning: some photos may be somewhat graphic, but I am sharing for educational purposes).   Oddity beneath the dew claw.   Off to the vet we went. "Freedom 46"

You most likely have heard the recent news about the "Freedom 46" - the 46 dogs (mainly Cocker Spaniels, plus a few other breeds) the Oldies But Goodies (OBG) Cocker Rescue helped to rescue from a property in Virginia. It just boggles the mind that people can treat animals in this manner...we hear story after story, and in this case, these poor dogs were residing in a "hot barn without anyone to give them proper exercise or keep their water dishes filled. Many were covered with their own feces and urine. OBG worked with Animal Control and with the support of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies to remove these dogs from that property," states Teresa Butler, the president of the OBG. "The dogs rescued from this property are now safely boarding with veterinarians that work with OBG and will be evaluated by veterinarians over the course of the next week with the goal of moving them into foster homes as quickly as possible. The Rainbow Bridge Welcomes A New FurAngel - Buddy, the Christmas Husky - A Forever Symbol of Hope for Rescued Dogs

My beloved Gibson is there. As is my Chelsey, Sandy, kitty Smokie, bunny Sunny, my fox Ah, many horses, and so many others pets. We have many furfriends who have also crossed The Rainbow Bridge. All of these beloved animals are there...so healthy and happy, with all the dogs enjoying their zoomies and playing Fetch all day in a land that is eternally beautiful. Sounds perfect. Only catch is when our devoted companions are there, we can no longer physically be with them. So while they are in a place where the spirit soars, our hearts are broken as we are missing them here with us.
