"You scream!
I scream!

This Flashback Friday moments dates back to 2006, when my daughter was sharing her ice cream with our "originals" Harley and Gibson, who was just a puppy! You can see at nearly six months of age, he was already the same size as Harley, who was one! My wooly boy didn't stay small for long! What has stayed the same though is there love for ice cream!

Do you woo-scream for ice cream?

A Wooly Pup Before the Pup Went Wooly: Fast Facts About Husky Fur on a Flashback Friday

Did Gibson always looks so fluffy?

In a word, no! In this photo of Gibson pictured above with my daughter at her graduation - which flashes back to 2006, when Gib was just a pup of six months with his short summer puppy coat, there was no hint of the big, almost 100-pound super fluffy wooly boy he would grow into! Aren't Husky coats just amazing? Here's some fun fast facts about a Siberian Husky's coat (traditional and wooly):

1) Blowin' in the Wind. They blow their undercoats out twice a year. And if you've ever seen the snow furries from a shedding Husky, you know just how major of an event this is - there's so much fur that you can make a life-size fur model from the shedding hair! The good news is that when they are not shedding, they really don't shed! I have a blue cordouroy couch to prove it! (However, with five Huskies, one is always at a point of shedding, meaning some Husky is shedding at some point year round here!) And the warmer the temperature, the more they shed. Best tip: get a really good self-cleaning slicker brush and an underrake comb!

2) Do Not Shave A Husky! I repeat, Do Not Shave A Husky! Now, you might be tempted, especially if you have a wooly Siberian or if it's hot where you live, but don't do it! Exception: for medical purposes only. Brushing and grooming is essential, but put away those clippers. Shaving a Husky can not only ruin the coat, but can cause serious health issues such as sunburn, parasite infestation, and overheating. Their coats are actually a protectant. Best tip: groom your Husky often to keep the coat in healthy condition. A healthy coat will keep a Husky cool in the summer, warm in the winter.

3) It's Raining. It's Pouring. A Siberian Husky's top coat is dubbed "waterproof" as it can literally deflect water off the fur. You can take your hand and squigee the water right off their coat! However, this does not mean a Husky should be left outside in the elements without shelter. Note about woolies: with a wooly, their longer non-typical coat can become heavy and soaked, and can freeze thereby posing a threat in the colder weather. Best tip: use a good absorbent towel and dry off a wooly's coat when wet.

4) Look Ma - No Smell! A Husky's coat is basically odor free! Now, how (p)awesome is that?!

5)  Fur, Fur Everywhere! What's a Husky parent to do? Wondering what to do with all that shedding fur? There are organizations (such as the Save Our Siberians Siberspace Rescue Fund at www.SOS-SRF.org) who will gladly accept Husky fur sheds to weave into some wonderful items, or you can spin and create  your own, to sell and raise funds to help homeless Huskies. For more info on how to save, clean, spin, and/or donate Husky fur, visit SOS-SRF info page HERE.

Flashback Friday Honors the Hero Dogs of 9/11

September 11, 2001. 9/11. Fourteen years ago the face of our U.S. landscape changed forever when we were attacked on our own soil. Today, 9/11, is dedicated to all those  - canine and human - who fearlessly responded to the call of duty that day, and the days following, at the World Trade Center in New York City, in the Staten Island landfill, at the Pentagon in Washington, DC; and in the Pennsylvanian field. Since this is a canine blog, I'd like to talk about the amazing four-legged heroes...more than 300 of them who answered the call that day and the many days following. Today, all but one of the SAR dogs have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

We will never forget.

“The most important thing for America to know about that working dogs, is that on a very personal level they serve human beings every single day. They are highly skilled and trained professionals…. We have been repeatedly told that technology can not at this point replicate the unique skills that they have.” ~Linda Blick, MSW, Tails of Hope Foundation, Inc.

The last known remaining living hero dog from 9/11 is a Golden Retriever named "Bretagne," whose first assignment was Ground Zero. Bretagne and her handler, Denise Corliss, were part of  Texas Task Force 1 who came to New York to search for survivors. When BarkPost learned that it was Bretagne's 16th birthday, they planned a very special celebration of a lifetime back in New York City for this very special canine...and here's a video highlighting the very special day, fit for the hero dog of 9/11!

Happy, Happy Birthday Bretagne! And heartfelt thanks and appreciation to you and your handler Denise for all your tireless efforts to help others on 9/11, and for your many years of service. To read the full BarkPost article on Bretagne's special birthday, visit HERE.

Inspired by the 9/11 hero dog "Sirius," a bomb detection dog who was killed when the twin towers collapsed, artist Ron Burns, who is also the Artist-in-Residence for the Human Society of the United States, created a beautiful portrait of Sirius that it is now hanging up inside New York City's 9/11 Memorial Museum. He then went on to paint beautiful portraits of other 9/11 search and rescue (SAR) dogs and therapy dogs that are part of a book called The Dogs of Ron Burns: A Tribute to the Dogs of 9/11 that is, according to the book description, a "tribute to the heroism of the search and rescue dogs who worked on September 11 and during recovery efforts." A beautiful way to memorialize these heroic dogs. You can read the full article by Gary Sharpiro HERE.

To watch the interview with the artist about his portraits of the 9/11 hero dogs that aired on KUSATV 9News, visit HERE.

The Dog Files is airing "Meet the Hero Dogs of 9/11"...so please be sure to check your area's listings for the Animal Planet's showings of this very special tribute show.

And in 2012, The Dog Files aired Episode 16 "Hero Dogs of 9/11: Legacy"

"If these dogs only knew what a difference they make. Certainly, there's nothing that can replace the precision of a dog's nose—and absolutely nothing that can replace a dog's heart."  — Bob Sessions, rescue worker, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

We will never forget.

Just yesterday, Thursday morning, the day before today's 14th anniversary of 9/11...a beautiful rainbow appeared across the Manhattan skyline stretching out from the World Trade Center's Freedom Tower and the amazing vision was captured by Ben Sturner of the Leverage Agency (@leverageagency on Twitter):

A sign from angels...a sign of hope...a continued healing.
We will never forget.

Sibe Summer Lovin' Had Me a Blast

"By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather And autumn's best of cheer." ~Helen Hunt Jackson

With the arrival of Labor Day, also comes the unofficial end to summer. September is such a beautiful month. Perfect really. The temperatures are still warm. The waters still sparkle. And the crickets still chirp all lulling us into the false sense that summer is still here...after all, it's not the 23rd yet! But even with still humid days, although we do not wish to admit it, the sunlight is growing shorter and there is something in the air; while not yet the cool snap of Autumn, it is something. Something that tells us summer is ready to leave as Autumn beckons in the not-to-distant future, waiting in all of its golden glory of colorful foliage, crisp air, and pumpkins decorating the landscapes and our food!

I love September. But I admit I will miss the long, hazy, lazy days of summer when everything seems to be moving at slightly slower pace. The Huskies lounging in the air condition with us or splashing in their pool ~ sled dogs without a sled or snow just being bathing beauty Sibes. But they are ready, just as I am, for the coolness of Fall, to once again walk in the valley of colorful beauty, eat pumpkin everything until we've had our fill, and roll around in the fallen crunchy leaves. Yes, Labor Day weekend is upon us, and we prepare to bid a fond farewell to yet another summer, but Autumn is waiting right around the corner, waiting in all of its cool, colorful glory as only Autumn can.

So on this Labor Day Weekend, we wish you all the fun of summer as it winds down and quietly fades into seasons past before Autumn is upon us. For today's Flashback Friday moment, we travel back to 2013 to our local beach when Wolf enjoyed his very first visit to the sandy shores of the Hudson River. The very best part was watching his reaction to the sound of the waves lapping upon the shore and the feel of the cold water as it cascaded over his paws for the very first time. Joyful memories I look forward to one day repeating again.

"Summer always ends with good memories." ~Anonymous
