May All Be Safe In Hurricane Florence's Path & Our #FiveSibes Safety Tips

Image
We here at FiveSibes are keeping everyone who will be affected by Hurricane Florence in our thoughts and prayers.  If you are evacuating, please be sure to take your pets to either wherever you are going, or safely with a friend out of the hurricane's path.  Above we share a few important tips to keep in mind. Please feel free to share! It is also posted (and you can share) on our FiveSibes: Siberian Husky K9 News & Reviews Facebook page. Our #1 Tip: Please, do not leave your pet(s) behind. If you need to evacuate, please call ahead to the shelter or place you will be staying to be sure they accept pets. Some do not permit animals. Our #2 Tip: When traveling, please be sure to crate or safety belt your pet in the vehicle. Our #3 Tip: Be sure to have both tags and microchip info up-to-date (including at the vet's office where the microchip company calls),  just in case they escape from you. Our #4 Tip:   Bring along a fully-st...

#FiveSibes Fourth of July Safety Tips & ASPCA Celebrates "ID Your Pet Day" With an #IDsPlease Summer #Giveaway!

Image
Today is July 1st - the ASPCA 's "ID Your Pet Day" and we are joining in their "ID's, Please!" to help raise awareness about the importance of tagging pets with a personalized ID with the pet's current information, as well as having pets microchipped (and if your pet already has a microchip implanted, please be sure the information on file is current).   "This holiday is especially timely as it's just a few days prior to July 4th - the time of year when many pets go missing due to fireworks and other loud noises." ~ ASPCA Speaking of July 4th, our U.S. celebration of Independence Day, America's Birthday, we do so enjoy many holiday traditions, such as parades, BBQs, picnics, pool parties, and watching firework s displays. But, along with all these wonderful summer-loving events, extra caution and care is required with our pets to ensure their safety and happiness as well. Topping the list is fireworks. While they can b...

Safety Tips to Keep the Fun in Memorial Day Weekend Festivities ~AND~ A Special Art Fundraiser You Won't Want to Miss!

Our Flashback Friday is a special one in honor of Memorial Day (Monday, May 25). This patriotic photo featuring our boy Wolf was taken a few years back. On Monday we will feature a special Memorial Day post in honor of our veterans, but today since it's the start to the weekend, we wanted to talk about some safety tips as Memorial Day weekend is also the unofficial start to summer in many areas. It's a time for family and friends get-togethers, barbeques, swimming, and outdoor fun, so we like to take this time to share a few FiveSibes Safety Tips as a reminder so everyone, including our pets, can enjoy the long weekend: Keep pets in a separate room or kennel while guests are arriving and leaving to avoid any escapes and to help quell any anxieties. Keep collar and tags on in case they get spooked or sneak off. Keep a leash nearby for emergency roundups. Keep lit candles and lighters out of their reach. Keep them away from hot/flaming BBQ grilles. Do not use...

Fall Back Time is This Weekend! Some Health & Safety Tips for Pets Prior to Turning Back Those Clocks!

Image
This Sunday, clocks in many areas back one hour from Daylight Saving Time (DST) to Standard Time at 2 AM. So don't be surprised if your furbaby gets you up an hour early starting Monday! Although our mechanical clocks say it's one time, their internal clocks will say another until it all evens out after a few days! So much for an extra hour of sleep! Each year, I  like to recap some helpful safety tips we should do as pet parents, before we turn back the clocks: If your pets are on specifically timed medications, i.e. seizure meds (like our boy Gibson), at least for the first day of the new time change, stagger the dosage times. If your pet typically takes his medications at 7 AM and 7 PM, for the first day of DST, give the AM dosage at the new fall-back time of 6:30 (true time would be 7:30, a half hour later than usual), and give the 7 PM dosage at 6:30 (true time would be 7:30). That way, while their internal clock says it's a bit...
