A Commentathon to Benefit "Live Gib Strong" K-9 Epilepsy Awareness in Honor of The Mighty Quinn's Gotcha Day!

Today is a very special day for our fellow Epi-furpal, handsome Quinn, of the beautiful White Dog Army (WDA)...it's his Gotcha Day! And to celebrate, they are doing something pretty awesome over at the WDA blog...they are holding a Gotcha Day Commentathon to benefit our Live Gib Strong K-9 Epilepsy Awareness Campaign, which benefits the Canine Epilepsy Resources site, which is home to the Epil-K9 list and supports Emma's Fund, and it is provided by the Epil-K9 Foundation.

 Reminder: Epi-Dog Story Submissions Due!

Just a friendly reminder that all Epi-dog stories and photo submissions for inclusion in my upcoming book is almost here! This book will tell the stories of these wonderfully courageous dogs who live/have lived life to the fullest, even with Canine Epilepsy and/or seizure disorders, and how they capture(d) our hearts and fill(ed) them with love. A percentage of proceeds post-production costs will be donated to the Canine Epilepsy Resources site, which is home to the Epil-K9 list and supports Emma's Fund, and it is provided by the Epil-K9 Foundation.

This will be a wonderful tribute to these brave dogs and help educate folks about dogs living their lives even with Canine Epilepsy. The book is due out later this year through ArcticHouse Publishing.

Flashback Friday #22: A Tale of A Prince and His Perch

"Woo! What are you looking at? I did not chew the new dog house," says Gibson in this Flashback photo of four years ago when he was just three years old!

How the story unfolded...

I fell in love with this "log cabin" dog house and purchased it online and then put it together proudly all on my own. It was, in my opinion, a thing of beauty and would fit perfectly
on our deck. At the time, we had just Harley, who was four
at the time, and Gibson, three. I couldn't wait for them to see it!


Our love birds seemed to really like their new deck furniture!


After Gibson christened it by nibbling on the trim, he made
the top of the dog house his very favorite perch, while
Harley lounged inside.

 

The best part was being inside the kitchen and seeing him
peek inside the window! In the summer, he would talk to me through the screen! 

 A while later the Pupsters came along and bumped the prince off his throne from time to time! But, Gibson managed to assert himself and keep his royal perch, but did (reluctantly) share it with little brother Wolf and sisters Chloe and Bandit from time to time!
 
 "This was my throne. Now I have to share."




 "Wooo!"

 And whatever happened to that wonderful, beautiful log cabin doghouse that was Gibson's favorite perch? With five Huskies - three of them pups - jumping up and down on it, sometimes the pups even managed to snuggle around Gibson on it - it soon become a bit wobbly, gnawed in many spots by the pups, and with Gibson just having been diagnosed with Canine Epilepsy, I didn't want to risk any of them getting hurt, so Hu-Mom here dismantled it and that was the end of Gibson's Husky palace! 

Ah...but the memories live on!

 "Okay, little bro, I guess we can share."

February is National Pet Dental Health Month

Open up and say, "Ahhhhh!" With February being National Pet Dental Health Month, it's a good time to review our pet's dental health regimen to be sure that what we are doing to keep our furkids' chompers clean and healthy is on target. 

First, a few quick questions:

 
  • Do you brush your pet's teeth? (There are a variety of "brushes" from traditional to a finger-style brush, a sponge, and wipes).
  • Do you perform periodic mouth inspections to be sure there are no broken teeth; sores, abrasions, or growths on the gums/tongue; or foul odor from the mouth?
  • Do you give your dog dental treats or dental specific items to chew on?
  • Do you have your veterinarian give your pet a dental check-up during visits?
  
Pictured above, our Harely shows off her canines...and while our girl does have good teeth, with age (she is now eight) there is some tartar build up in the back, so under the direction of her vet, we are keeping a close watch on her and she may have to go in to have a professional cleaning in the near future in order to prevent any issues down the line. Last year, when Wolf, who was four at the time, underwent surgery for the papillomas that grew on his leg, we opted to have his teeth cleaned since he was already under and now he has beautiful pearly whites!

Flashback Friday #21: A Bandit of Love


Bandit's sweet little face and beautiful puppy mask stole our hearts. She came home with us along with her littermates sister Chloe and brother Wolfie when they were just mere pups.

 Bandit is our BandaBear, our Miss B... and our "Crazy Girl." Bandit has always been our challenge Husky. Bandit flies rather than runs, and she is absolutely attached to and obsessed with our alpha queen, Harley. Her monicker fits her perfectly and I sometimes wonder if her name didn't just find her as she is truly a thief at heart! Named because her mask resembled that of a bandit's, she will steal every toy and pillow from the rest of the pack family and pile them under her. She will then guard them as if they were her own. Thankfully, the rest of the pack tends to ignore her challenging issue of possessiveness, and on occasion, surrogate momma Harley will have to remind her just who is the boss of the pack family! 

"What do you mean they are not all mine, Mom???"

 She is now pretty much all deaf, but she is also real love bug who just wants to be hugged and given lots and lots of belly rubs...just so long as she can have all the toys and all the beds!

It's Mardi Gras Time!

Laissez les bon temps rouler! 
Let the good times roll! 

  
Mardi Gras is here! And it's the perfect time to think about dressing up, food, fun, and watching the 
"Tails & Tiaras: Here Comes Honey Bow Wow" parade!


First, we'd like to offer our congratulatory woos the Krewe of Barkus' King of Barkus XXI - "Jacques Miller Wallis," a Vizslas, and the Queen of Barkus XXI - "Hattie," a Great Dane. You can read all about this duo on the Mystic Krewe of Barkus website!

Of course, here at the FiveSibes household, in honor of the Krewe of Barkus parade, we dub our "Nanuk 'Harley' Mari" as the Queen, and her true love, "'Gibson' Les Paul of Mystic Mountain" the King! 
Three woos for the King and Queen of the Krewe of FiveSibes! Here's our royal couple, from last year's photoshoot, getting ready for a celebratory pooch smooch!

 
And speaking of Sibes and Krewes and parades...here are some of our beautiful furpals from the Texas Sled Dog Rescue and their furiends as they had fun walking in the Galveston Island Humane Society pet walk called "Krewe of Barkus and Meoux!" Now this my kind of a parade! Woo!
