Happy "Sweet 16" Birthday to our Alpha Queen Harley at the Rainbow Bridge

Image
Today is a bittersweet post as it would have been our beautiful alpha queen Harley's Sweet 16 Birthday. Harley was our first Siberian Husky, and the OG of the FiveSibes pack family! She was the inspiration behind my love of the breed, and the reason I fell under the Husky Potato Chip syndrome! (I could not just have one Husky)! Birthdays were also so much fun with my FiveSibes. It's as if they understood that cake and toys were coming! And Harley naturally embraced her princess role! She loved crowns! That's our alpha queen! Our queen wore her crown proudly! Cake time was always a blast! She was the "momma" dog...taking in the three Pupsters as if they were her own. She was the true love of Gibson, smitten since the moment he met her and she rammed him head over fluffy butt into the pool! I always loved how she would keep the Pupsters in line, teach them the ways of a Siberian Husky, and snuggle up with all of them. She was spunky and sassy, and could even be ...

A Friend Journeys to the Rainbow Bridge

When I see a rainbow, I think of all the beauty in life. Our furpal Suka felt the same way...he and his Hu-Mom K spoke of life's beauty many times in their blog. I know that so many of us here in Bloggerville have now heard the news about Suka leaving on his journey for the Rainbow Bridge. He had just been diagnosed with incurable heart disease and was given anywhere from a few weeks to a few years to love K, feel the snow on his nose, and dealing with those Kung Fu bunnies. It was with such shock and sadness to hear our dear beautiful Suka was desperately needed as a FurAngel, and was called for his next big adventure in the sky a lot sooner rather than later. We all have said before how we have become a close-knit community of pet parents here, and when one of us loses a beloved pal, we all feel it. We weep tears for friends we may never have met, but have surely come to know through their stories, photos, and Emails. Such is our friendship with Suka and K. I'...

Newsy Tuesday: A Tribute to a Fellow Epi-Dog Who has Travelled to the Rainbow Bridge

There is no cure (yet) for Canine Epilepsy. There are medications and vitamins and diet plans available all to help manage seizures - sometimes successfully, and unfortunately, sometimes not so successful. Sadly, today's story is of the latter for a furpal we met via social networking about Canine Epilepsy - the very handsome Fred of Hound Girl , who just earned his wings and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Today's blog post is dedicated to Fred. Fred was an Epi-dog, diagnosed in June 2011. He is also one of the beautiful stars of my Canine Epilepsy Awareness video posted last November (see Fred at 3:53) . Yesterday, via his hu-mom's Facebook page, I sadly learned that Fred went to the hospital and was experiencing a large number of cluster seizures throughout the night before he was finally set free to cross the Rainbow Bridge. A decision I know must have been so heartbreaking to make...yet, watching helplessly as a beloved friend has one seizure after another as their own...

"Canine Cooking Corner" Visits CBS Video Vault and a Dog Chef!

Image
It all sounds good to food hobbyist Chloe! F or this installment of "Canine Cooking Corner," while I don't have a FiveSibes video this week, I do have an item I came across that I'd like to share. It's from a 2005 news video from the CBS "Early Show," as reported by the show's resident vet, Dr. Debbye Turner, called "'Bone' Appetite" that features dog chef and author Micki Voisard, who discussed home cooking for dogs. Perfect for this column, wouldn't you say? Ms. Voisard, who is also the founder of Dog Chefs of America , whips up delectable dishes for dogs and holds canine cooking classes world wide! Pretty cool. I hope she has one in our area sometime soon!   J ust a quick reminder that no matter what type of diet your canine companion is on, it's always wise to check with the vet before changing/altering your dog's nutritional intake. A nd while we are on the subject of food...with another holiday once again...
