Flashback Friday Honors the Hero Dogs of 9/11

Image
September 11, 2001. 9/11. Fourteen years ago the face of our U.S. landscape changed forever when we were attacked on our own soil. Today, 9/11, is dedicated to all those  - canine and human - who fearlessly responded to the call of duty that day, and the days following, at the World Trade Center in New York City, in the Staten Island landfill, at the Pentagon in Washington, DC; and in the Pennsylvanian field. Since this is a canine blog, I'd like to talk about the amazing four-legged heroes...more than 300 of them who answered the call that day and the many days following. Today, all but one of the SAR dogs have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We will never forget. Rescue Dogs of 911 by gojohns “The most important thing for America to know about that working dogs, is that on a very personal level they serve human beings every single day. They are highly skilled and trained professionals…. We have been repeatedly told that technology can not at this point ...

Sibe Summer Lovin' Had Me a Blast

Image
"By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather And autumn's best of cheer." ~ Helen Hunt Jackson With the arrival of Labor Day, also comes the unofficial end to summer. September is such a beautiful month. Perfect really. The temperatures are still warm. The waters still sparkle. And the crickets still chirp all lulling us into the false sense that summer is still here...after all, it's not the 23rd yet! But even with still humid days, although we do not wish to admit it, the sunlight is growing shorter and there is something in the air; while not yet the cool snap of Autumn, it is some thing. Something that tells us summer is ready to leave as Autumn beckons in the not-to-distant future, waiting in all of its golden glory of colorful foliage, crisp air, and pumpkins decorating the landscapes and our food!   I love September. But I admit I will miss the long, hazy, lazy days of summer when everything seems to be mov...

"Woo...we'll take five orders of kibble-green bean omelettes, five orders of baked potatoes, five organic vanilla yogurts, and five extra large waters to go please!" ~Bandit of the FiveSibes In this Flashback Friday photo from quite a few ago, our girl Bandit sniffed out my cooking and decided to get a closer look...and maybe even a taste...through the open kitchen window! It's a fun and favorite photo of mine! Flashback Fridays are brought to you by us - the FiveSibes - and our co-host, Love is being owned by a Husky , each Friday. It's National Dog Day: Happy is Spelled D-O-G!

Image
"Happy" is Spelled D - O - G! Today is National Dog Day! While every day is "dog day" here, it is nice to have a special date to remind us about how special our dogs are, what we've learned from them, and that not all dogs are as fortunate as ours having loving families to be spoiled by and wonderful homes to live in. The numbers of dogs across the breeds; just the number of Huskies alone, who are homeless and waiting in shelters to be adopted or fostered, is just staggering. I'd love to see everyone take today (or any/every day) to not only appreciate the wonder of our beloved dogs, but to also think about a homeless dog in a nearby shelter. Maybe stop by for a quick visit, give a hug and treat, maybe ask to take the dog out for a walk, and bring a less fortunate dog some cheer so he/she can have a happy National Dog Day, too. And, please, don't overlook the special needs dogs. They deserve love, too! Maybe you can become an advocate for the sh...
