Why Does Gibson's Pumpkin Purple Represent Canine Epilepsy Awareness?
In a pumpkin shell—as many of you already know, our Gibson was diagnosed with idiopathic Epilepsy shortly after his third birthday, and purple is the official color of Epilepsy awareness. The Purple Pumpkin Project, an initiative of the Epilepsy Foundation, was developed so that when you put a purple pumpkin out, whether it is one you painted, or one you bought (like Gib's in the photos above), it will encourage others, especially Trick-or-Treaters to ask, "Why is Gibson's pumpkin purple?" And...in the spirit of awareness, we would answer, "For Canine Epilepsy awareness."
Can Dogs With Epilepsy Enjoy Life?
Absolutely! Dogs are amazing. While Gibson had epilepsy, he never let that stop him from having fun, especially on Howl-oween! So each year, I still put up purple pumpkins in his memory, and remind others that dogs with epilepsy can ~ and DO ~ live happy lives for however long we are blessed to have them. Even living with seizures, they never let that stop them from enjoying life, the same as any other dog.
So in the spirit of Gibson and Howl-oween, I wanted to share the above new updated coloring page with you all. Color it in and put it on display! Then, paint a traditional pumpkin purple, or create one of your own, or even buy one (like Gibson's above, or like my crystal one) and when folks come a trick-or-treating and ask you why you have a purple pumpkin out, you can tell them all about Gibson and how dogs with epilepsy (Epi-dogs) enjoy life and healthy Howl-oween doggy treats, just the same as any other dog!

Dewclaws. Such an unnecessary evil for a dog. In August, I noticed Harley limping. At 11-and-a-half, she is a bit stiff-legged at times from arthritis, but this was a more pronounced limp and she was having an extra tough time sitting down. She seemed very uncomfortable. She was also becoming a bit snarley, especially when I was touching her paw, which is something that never typically bothers her. Upon further checking, I noticed an odd lump around her dewclaw on her right leg, thinking it was possibly a pulled dewclaw, maybe a splinter, thistle, or even a bee sting , she became extremely agitated when I touched it. (Warning: some photos may be somewhat graphic, but I am sharing for educational purposes). Oddity beneath the dew claw. Off to the vet we went. At the vet, Harley is protective of her paw by hiding it . Harley's paw was shaved and it uncovered a very large inflamed area surrounding the dewclaw and beyond, as you can see in ...
You most likely have heard the recent news about the "Freedom 46" - the 46 dogs (mainly Cocker Spaniels, plus a few other breeds) the Oldies But Goodies (OBG) Cocker Rescue helped to rescue from a property in Virginia. It just boggles the mind that people can treat animals in this manner...we hear story after story, and in this case, these poor dogs were residing in a "hot barn without anyone to give them proper exercise or keep their water dishes filled. Many were covered with their own feces and urine. OBG worked with Animal Control and with the support of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies to remove these dogs from that property," states Teresa Butler, the president of the OBG. "The dogs rescued from this property are now safely boarding with veterinarians that work with OBG and will be evaluated by veterinarians over the course of the next week with the goal of moving them into foster homes as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, we do n...
Original photo by and courtesy of Lisa Byrd; modified by FiveSibes The Rainbow Bridge must be some (p)awesome place to be for it has so many amazing, beautiful angel animals there. My beloved Gibson is there. As is my Chelsey, Sandy, kitty Smokie, bunny Sunny, my fox Ah, many horses, and so many others pets. We have many furfriends who have also crossed The Rainbow Bridge. All of these beloved animals are there...so healthy and happy, with all the dogs enjoying their zoomies and playing Fetch all day in a land that is eternally beautiful. Sounds perfect. Only catch is when our devoted companions are there, we can no longer physically be with them. So while they are in a place where the spirit soars, our hearts are broken as we are missing them here with us. It is a hurt we all as pet parents now way too well. And today, as unbelievable as it seems as I write this, we have to bid a final farewell to another dear furpal, Buddy, the Christmas Husky , who has now earned h...
