Le'ts Celebrate! It's Our 5th BLOGiversary!

Image
Wow! Five years! On this date in 2010, I debuted my very first FiveSibes post for National Pet Dental Health Month featuring our alpha queen Harley!  My very first FiveSibes blog post in 2010! It's been such a great ride and I look forward to continuing sharing this written and photographic journey with my FiveSibes with you. Harley, Gibson, Wolf, Chloe, Bandit, and myself just love being part of the Blogville community. As an author and photojournalist by trade, as well as being a former horse trainer and riding instructor, and always a dog parent and trainer, it was a natural segue for me to turn my pen and camera lens to writing about my love of dogs, specifically, my five Siberian Huskies. My FiveSibes are such a source of joy and inspiration (and a lot of chuckles, too, with their Sibe silliness), and I am so thrilled to have this great forum to share it all on. I take a lot of pride in my writing and photography, and enjoy the marriage of my love for dogs with my lo...

Flashing Healthy Smiles on a Flashback Friday!

Image
Come on and flash us your pet's healthy smile! With February being National Pet Dental Health Month, and it's our weekly FiveSibes Flashback Friday Blog Hop, I thought I'd share this photo Harley from a few years back flashing us her big beautiful Sibe smile for a review of good dental care for our dogs. Brushing our teeth and having regular dental and hygienist visits is commonplace for us...but what about our dogs?   “One of the most common problems veterinarians see in pets is dental disease, and, unfortunately, these issues can get serious if untreated," states Dr. Clark K. Fobian, immediate past president of the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA). "I remind pet owners that an untreated dental infection can spread to the heart, kidneys and other organs, and suddenly become life threatening. Practicing good dental hygiene at home, in addition to regular dental cleanings by your veterinarian, is the most efficient and cost-effective ...

And just what is the Krewe of Barkus ? According to the Hall of Festivities Mardi Gras , the Barkus Krewe: "... was created in November of 1992 at a meeting of the Margaret Orr Fan Club (Margaret Orr being a WDSU-TV Weather Anchor). Its membership limited to canines, the Krewe of Barkus is headquartered in the vicinity of the "Flea Market" and includes such rules as: "Cats, while welcome, will not be provided security."  Photo courtesy of Lillian Malm The first official Krewe meeting was held in January of 1993, when the members elected "Jo Jo McWood" as Queen Barkus I. "Jager Freeman" was selected as King Barkus I. This annual French Quarter event...the only Mardi Gras Parade and Krewe for and by dogs...is open to the public. A non-profit organization, it raises funds every year to benefit local animal shelters and national humane societies. It's motto is: "Humane Treatment for All of God...

So each Monday we will be highlighting one of our Merry Meme posters for all to enjoy!  Just what is a "meme," you may ask? You've seen them. You've chuckled at them. You've even shared them on social media. I mean, who doesn't love a good meme?! However, if you're not sure what one is, a meme is, according to dictionary.com, " a cultural item in the form of an image, video, phrase, etc., that is spread via the Internet and often altered in a creative or humo...

Brrrr, Baby It's Cold Outside. Sharing ASPCA Cold Weather Tips for Pet Safety

Image
Cold, snow and 4-foot icicles! The Northeast and New England has been hammered with what the media is referring to as a "biblical" number of snowstorms, blizzards, and hurricane-like winds, and record-breaking bitter cold temperatures in a decade! We are currently under more than two feet of snow, with another storm on its way this upcoming week. The temperatures have plummeted to below zero, with up to 35 mph winds, and  dangerous wind chills-tonight alone it's 4 ℉, but, with the bitter Arctic-like winds, registering -20℉ - -30 ℉ ! If your dogs can go out in the yard and free run, please keep a watch on them that they are not left out too long in case you get distracted by the phone, text, or TV show. Also, be sure to have their collars and tags on in case they escape. With snow, it's much more difficult for them to find their way home. Be sure their microchip info is up-to-date as well.  Even though we have "snow dogs" - Siberian Huskies, this...
