Elves Wanted to Send Howliday Cheer to A Senior Dog & Two Sanctuary Epi-Dogs at Shadow Husky Rescue During Our 4th Annual Gift Drive

Woo! Welcome to our #FiveSibes 4TH Annual Sponsor-A-Husky for the Howlidays Drive! This year we once again had five Rescues answer our call-out and will be participating, so stay tuned! This post is highlighting SHADOW HUSKY RESCUE INC. featuring  "MERLIN," and two Epi-dogs (dogs with epilepsy) "LILLY," and "FREDDY!"

This post is one part of this year's FIVE-PART (meaning five different rescues across the country) SPONSOR-A-HUSKY FOR THE HOWLIDAYS post. While at the end I'll have one main post with links to all four Rescues, I am also highlighting each of the four Rescues into individual posts so these beautiful homeless Huskies get the attention they deserve, and hopefully several kind "elves" will help fill their Howliday Wish Lists and bring some joy to these Huskies while they wait for their forever families. 🎄You can also ADOPT one of them, making the rest of their lives full of love! A link is always included in each rescue dog's bio to help you navigate to their adoption guidelines and applications.🎄

Quick ReCap: ‘Tis the season to help homeless Siberian Huskies in need! As we've all seen, there is a serious problem of Huskies and northern breed dogs being "surrendered," or worse, abandoned, some ill and injured, and their only hope is that rescue folks will be able to save them. Due to the tremendous number of them being abandoned by what they thought were their forever families, rescues are filled beyond capacity, some have closed intakes, while others are hoping more fosters step forward to help give them temporary homes until a forever one can be found. Without them, these beautiful dogs have zero chance. They are a magnanimous breed that need exercise, socialization, interaction, and love. A shelter is no place for any dog, especially this breed. And there are just too many now who are waiting for their forever homes, whether it is in the care of a loving foster family or waiting at a brick-and-mortar rescue for someone to come and welcome them into their family. These dogs depend on rescues, and we depend on rescues to help them--but the rescues need help, or else they can't continue to save the Huskies.

Why do I do this? For me, sharing my life with my beloved FiveSibes—Harley, Gibson, Wolfgang, Chloe, and Bandit—I learned so much and received so much love back from them. They will always be in my heart. And in their names, I’d like to once again help other Siberian Huskies in need get a little taste of what a wonderful Christmas filled with love from a forever family can be like.

Let's meet "Merlin"
and see what's on his Wish List!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sweet senior Husky, Merlin, is a true holiday miracle thanks to rescue. He was saved within minutes of being euthanized.  He found tied to a tree in poor condition as you will read below, but has his faith in humanity restored! Shadow Husky Rescue, Inc. sent in a request to rescue him past his deadline to the SEACCA shelter, which was granted in October. Says "Master Wolf" Tim McVicker of Shadow Husky Rescue Inc., “We are heartfelt steadfast 100% behind this striking boy who has faced obstacle after obstacle and stands strong at least 12 years of age! He was neutered and a ping pong ball sized tumor was removed from his hip, which we just were informed the histopathology shows it is benign. He has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and just begun levothyroxine meds. The vet hopes it’ll help with his skin issues. Once he is ready and his alopecia has gotten better, we hope to adopt him out to loving home.”
'Tis the season for miracles, and Merlin is a miracle story for sure. From death row to Shadow Husky Rescue and now with a loving, caring foster mom, he will one day be healed enough to be adopted and live the rest of his life knowing love and gentle touches. Notes Tim, “As you know, Merlin was a mythical figure central to the legend of King Arthur with mystical abilities. He turned himself into a bird, but in our Merlin’s case, we started by already giving his life back and freedom. With fur loss around his neck, a beige blotchy, flakey coat showing dirt and flea debris, hyperpigmented skin (alopecia) caused by numerous parasitic infections, a mass on his left hip, and cloudy eyes, this 12-year-old un-neutered male needed love and care.” And that, he now has. Let's help make Merlin have a wonderful howliday, most like his first.
Just look at how Merlin's adjusting to freedom and a new chance at a loving life! His foster mom has shared this video clip below, and oh, be still my heart, look what a kind, sweet, boy he is...after all he's been through.
The perfect Gifts for Lilly and Freddy, who are forever Sanctuary Dogs at Shadow Husky Rescue, would be some wonderful donations of gifts and/or supplements listed on their shared Wish List below.
Let's meet Epi-dog "Lilly"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 At the Shadow Husky Rescue, Inc. sanctuary located in California, in addition to doing rescue work, they also offer a lifetime sanctuary to those who need forever, loving care due to health and/or medical issues, such as Freddy and Lilly, who both have been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy.

While caring for one dog with epilepsy (an "Epi-dog"), two can be even more challenging, but manageable, says Elizabeth McVicker, who along with her husband, “Master Wolf” Tim McVicker operate Shadow Husky Rescue Inc. Dear Freddy was rescued from SEAACA Downey Shelter back in July 2024, and they welcomed Lilly in in May 2024 after her former owner passed away. Lilly has tremors and shaking, her latest seizure was in September.

Let's meet Epi-dog "Freddy"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Freddy’s first seizure at Shadow Husky Rescue was in November 2024, and most recently he had a seizure in October 2025 during the Full Harvest Moon. Both Freddy's and Lilly's seizures have been managed with medications, but they both also experience prolonged seizures, which is why they are permanent residents of Shadow Husky Rescue's Sanctuary. So how nice would it be if they woke up Christmas morning to find goodies from some wonderful, thoughtful Elves? Check their Wish List, even check it twice, to see if you send them something nice!
You can ready more about Lilly and Freddy, who were both featured on my FiveSibes' November Epilepsy Awareness Month (#NEAM) Epi-Star Feature HERE.
Lilly & Freddy's Shared Wish List!
While dogs with epilepsy enjoy some of the same things as non-Epis, they do have some special needs.
Oregon's Wild Harvest Organic Milk Thistle
Liver Support (with 80% silymarin).
This was the one I  had selected to give my Epi-dog, Gibson.
Since there's two Epi-dogs, getting this larger size is best.
Original PetSTEP Folding Pet Ramp in Graphite
THIS is the model I had for Gibson. It serves a dual purpose - 1) to aide Lilly & Freddy getting into vehicles (sometimes Epi-dogs can experience weak hind ends from medications)...AND...2) It can serve as a makeshift stretcher in the event you need to get the Epi-dog to the vet or ER and s/he cannot walk on her/his own.
30" Pedestal Outdoor Oscillating Fan with Misting Kit
Yes,  my absolutely Gibson had this model and it was wonderful! The misting fan actually noticeably drops the outdoor temperature in the area it is placed in. Since heat/overheating is a trigger for some Epi-dogs, this is a wonderful add to keep Lilly & Freddy cooler on those hot Cali days.
While this is a bit pricey, it would be nice if a business in support of Shadow Husky Rescue Inc. played Elf and had one of these delivered to the Sanctuary where I'm sure Lilly & Freddy would share space under it!
2-Pack one for Lilly & one for Freddy!
Size XL
 Click on image to order!
K&H Pet Products Large Cool Bed III, Indoor/Outdoor Ortho Cooling Beds
This was my Epi-dog Gibson's favorite bed. Heat can be a possible trigger seizure for some Epi-dogs, and this bed helps keeps a dog with epilepsy cool. These would be great for both Lilly & Freddy, especially in the California heat!
Another helpful item for Epi-dogs are Reflective Cooler Collar with Ice Pack
Size XL
Cooler Collar Ice Pack Refills
Bedsure Plus Orthopedic Dog Bed with removable washable covers, which is important for dogs who have seizures.
Size Large Dogs - 38"
And of course some Husky Coffee Co. Treats! They'll be happy to share with Merlin!
 If you do become an "elf," I'd love to know! And if you do send a present, please let them know you are participating in the FiveSibes Sponsor-A-Husky Gift Drive!
 You can see all the dogs Shadow Husky Rescue Inc. has available for adoption right now at:
Our FiveSibes Christmas Wish would be for every homeless dog to have a loving forever home for Christmas. But, until all of these Sibes can find their forever families, anything we can do to help out the rescues fill these Wish Lists so this Howliday season, is a wonderful thing!
