National Black Dog Day: Adopt A Black Dog!

National Black Dog Day was founded by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert, author,  animal Behaviorist and rescue advocate. She is also the founder of National Dog Day, Cat Day, Puppy Day, Mutt Day, Pet Day, Wildlife Day, Horse Protection Day and many more awareness holidays! The idea behind today is to bring awareness to black dogs, who I think are absolutely stunning, but many for some reason, are sadly overlooked in shelters.

As a photojournalist and longtime dog blogger, as well as a hu-mom to both a black and white Siberian Husky, and a back cat, I think they are so stunning! And...there are many ways to photograph a black dog (or cat) that highlights their beauty. You can dress them in a bright collar, harness, or bandana. Pose them with special lighting. In the winter, white snow can be a stunning contrast with a black dog. In the spring, have them sit or lie down by colorful plants/trees. Summertime take photos of them in a blue pool or on green grass. In the Autumn, a black dog with the fall foliage in the background or in a pile of colorful leaves makes for gorgeous photos. If you know of some black dogs in shelters, offer to take some fabulous photos of them to help them be seen and hopefully adopted!

The next time you are visiting a shelter or rescue, please stop and get to know a black dog...
it may turn out to be your very next best furry friend!
