Looking For a Natural Flea, Tick & Mosquito Repellent? FiveSibes Review Wondercide®

Wolfie was happy he had no pesky fleas, ticks, or mosquitos bothering him!

'Tis the season for those pesky fleas and dreadful ticks. When it comes to flea and tick preventatives, there is a whole market full of products for your pets. I have been asked what did I use on my FiveSibes. While I have used traditional preventatives when my FiveSibes were young, having an Epi-dog (dog with Epilepsy) the chemicals in traditional preventatives was always a concern. Fortunately, my Gibson had no issues with our choice of standard flea and tick preventatives. But, as my Huskies grew older, it became more of a concern as Harley developed skin issues along her spine and I did not want to use any of the chemical formulas, and when we were switched to a "newer" product (that begins with a T), our sweet Chloe suffered temporary blindness and Wolfie became so ill he vomited. I reported this to our vet who immediately pulled it from their shelves and reported it (and since there has been a lot of reports of dogs getting ill from this particular brand), so I went in search of a more natural product. Now there are natural recipes out there, but I actually discovered Wondercide® Flea & Tick Control Spray, made with natural essential oils and switched all of my FiveSibes to it. (It's now a 3-in-1 spray as it also helps to repel mosquitoes as well, and they also offer it in drops and flea collars).

What Exactly is Wondercide?

According to the site, "Wondercide was founded by Stephanie Boone after her dog Luna suffered pest control poisoning from harmful chemicals in common flea-and-tick medication and yard sprays. She knew there had to be a better way. Wondercide protects Packs of every kind with safe and effective plant-based solutions." You can check out their list of ingredients HERE.

Wolfie always had anxiety issues, as well as occurrences at various times of skin tags, papillomas, and tumors--things that I was very concerned chemicals could exacerbate. While in his younger days he, as were all of my FiveSibes, on the standard flea and tick treatments, as he grew older and papillomas became more, I felt it a safer route to switch to less harsh (and possibly toxic) preventatives to a more natural method. I recalled how effective it was at warding off fleas and ticks without any reactions with my Harley, so I switched Wolfie, and we never had any reactions nor any flea or tick problems! And, it never-thankfully- affected Harley's age-related onset of alopecia. (I never applied to the bare spots, but rather around them). The key I found is that is does need to be reapplied every 2 to 3 days. This worked for us in our "neck of the woods." If you reside in a heavily tick-infested area,  you may need to keep an extra eye out to be sure it is working for you.

As with anything new, try a small area on your dog first to be sure they do not have any reaction.

How Does It Work?

The way the spray works is you spray sections of your dog with it and then rub it in with your hand as close to you dog's skin. (The smell is divine!) I also did their back, underbelly, legs, and tail. Reapply every few days.

According to Wondercide*:

  • KILLS & REPELS. Using natural essential oils, this spray is proven to kill by contact, repel and prevent 98-100% of fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. It eliminates the entire pest life cycle, including eggs, larvae and adults.

Woo! We LOVE this stuff!

The fragrance I chose is the Lemongrass. It also comes in Peppermint, Cedarwood, and Rosemary**. The Lemongrass has a wonderful light citrus fragrance, and Wolfie enjoyed it, too!

(**Please Note: Dogs with epilepsy should AVOID Rosemary, as it is a possible trigger for seizures).

Wolfie sniffing the Fresh Lemongrass scent of Wondercide and liking it, as did I!

Why Do We Like Wondercide?
For many reasons, starting with the natural ingredients that are not harsh chemicals. Although it has to be reapplied every few days, it is a little effort for a gentle flea & tick & mosquito repellent that actually works! And the smell is so fresh and nice! When I first switched from traditional flea and tick preventatives to Wondercide, I will admit I was skeptical. Hopeful and happy I discovered something like this, but skeptical if it would work. I am happy to report, it worked so well! My Sibes were never bugged by fleas, ticks, or mosquitoes when on this!

My only note again is that if you have an Epi-dog, do not use the Rosemary scent as Rosemary is a known possible trigger for seizures. Select one of the other wonderful scents (we love the Lemongrass).

Other Products?
Wondercide can also be sprayed on bedding. Plus, they also have it in new single monthly applications, as well as yard sprays! For pet application, I used the spray bottle in the Fresh Lemongrass Scent,

  1. That's such a wonderful idea, we like natural more than the typical pest poisons.

  2. I really like Wondercide too! I used both the individual and the yard spray when I lived in NY. The patio area was always getting so many bugs and there was lots of vegetation close by so I used the yard spray in that area. Wolfie looks so beautiful in these photos.

  3. I wish Wondercide had worked for us. We tried it and I'd still find ticks on my dogs daily. My Fenrir ended up with Lyme disease from one of them. That was when I decided we had to go with something stronger. I hate using the chemicals, but nothing natural I've tried has worked well where we live. We have a crazy amount of ticks here. It's probably the biggest downside to living where we do.

  4. What a lovely product. I really admire your veterinarian removing the other product from his/her shelves when finding out about the bad reactions your dogs had. I like that Wondercide uses plant based ingredients and the scents sound divine. Thanks for sharing your experience with this flea and tick repellent alternative that's safe for pets. Sharing and pinning this post!

  5. I love this idea! I stopped using the chemical stuff after the first year I had Henry and then playing a bit on the edge. Henry has a sensitive stomach and non of those products agreed with him. Besides, I just hate giving him chemicals unless I have to do it. I'm definitely bookmarking this one to order. I think I'll go with the lemongrass option as well. Thanks for this one. Henry says thanks too!

  6. We have so many ticks and fleas in our area, that our vet recommends a stronger preventative (one of our dogs has Lyme disease.) However, I think Wondercide might be a great choice during the late winter/earliest spring when the ticks and fleas are less likely to be around.

  7. Unfortunately, my dog cannot stand the strong smell of essential oils. I tried similar products a few times and she just goes crazy. Fortunately, we never had an issue with fleas and for ticks we're experimenting with sonic-type of products. They didn't prove to not be working.

  8. This sounds like a great product! It's interesting that it is approved for cats. I will have to look into that a little more! Cats can be very sensitive to essential oils. We don't have a big problem with fleas and ticks in my apartment, but I know some people that would be very interested in this. I'm going to pass this along and keep in mind for my kitties.

  9. We don't have ticks here but I know they are really unpleasant for dogs (and some cats) and this looks like it does the job for worried pet owners who struggle to keep on top of the problem of icky ticks!

  10. Essential oils are my first go-to for just about everything and those ingredients are a potent group. I've seen and heard too many horror stories about anti-flea collars so this makes 'pawfect' sense. Good for the dog, seems great for us uprights. Win-win.
