A Birthday Fond(ant)ly Remembered

Tomorrow is my birthday, and this one from five years ago always springs to mind. What a birthday this was! At the time, I had been on a special diet for my health and feeling quite grumpy because my acupuncturist had me on a detoxing plan, so all I pretty much ate was seeds and dirt--hence the grumpiness. My husband and daughter went back and forth on whether to get me a cake, knowing I was on the special diet. Ultimately, they decided to get one, because what's a birthday without a cake? Even if I couldn't eat it, I could still enjoy the ceremony surrounding it.

 

They totally surprised me with this beautiful cake complete with a portrait of my beloved heart dog, Gibson, on the icing! It was truly a work of art! The cake was so pretty, for a moment, I thought about saving the top! (Confession time: a few years earlier they had a custom cake made with five fondant Huskies on top, and while they eagerly waited to eat the creative sweets, I did not let them because, yup, I saved them! Even sprayed those delectable Huskies with clear acrylic! They are still proudly perched in my curio cabinet)! 

 

I loved that cake. And yes, I did eat a piece! Even Gibbie liked it! (Well, more liked he enjoyed sneaking in some licks as you can see in the bottom photo!) Sigh...little did I know that this would be the last birthday he would be celebrating with me as he made his journey to north of the Rainbow Bridge that December.

 

It truly is so important to cherish each and every special moment as they are happening for they truly are memories in the making.

 

Oh, and every birthday since, I still jokingly hear about how I would not my family eat those fondant Huskies!

    It is my birthday on Sunday which is the eve of our Fast - Yom Kippur so will not be celebrating. I love the Friday memories you share as they are so precious and wonderful, they always make me smile. Happy Birthday with a woof from Layla

    Happy birthday!! How cool, I never knew it was even possible to save fondant! You are SO right, we have to cherish every moment we have with our loved ones. Having a senior dog now has made me even more aware of that fact. I hope you have an amazing birthday!!

    There is nothing worse than having a birthday and being on the diet. I remember how sad it was when one of Cookie's birthdays fell right in the middle of her pancreatitis.

    What a beautiful cake. And thank you for the reminder to celebrate every moment. I would have done the same with the fondant huskies. My mom once tried to make me cat shaped pancakes - I couldn’t eat them lol.

#PrayersForHarley - Dewclaw Tumor

Dewclaws. Such an unnecessary evil for a dog. In August, I noticed Harley limping. At 11-and-a-half, she is a bit stiff-legged at times from arthritis, but this was a more pronounced limp and she was having an extra tough time sitting down. She seemed very uncomfortable. She was also becoming a bit snarley, especially when I was touching her paw, which is something that never typically bothers her. Upon further checking, I noticed an odd lump around her dewclaw on her right leg, thinking it was possibly a pulled dewclaw, maybe a splinter, thistle, or even a bee sting , she became extremely agitated when I touched it.    (Warning: some photos may be somewhat graphic, but I am sharing for educational purposes).   Oddity beneath the dew claw.   Off to the vet we went. The Rainbow Bridge Welcomes A New FurAngel - Buddy, the Christmas Husky - A Forever Symbol of Hope for Rescued Dogs

My beloved Gibson is there. As is my Chelsey, Sandy, kitty Smokie, bunny Sunny, my fox Ah, many horses, and so many others pets. We have many furfriends who have also crossed The Rainbow Bridge. All of these beloved animals are there...so healthy and happy, with all the dogs enjoying their zoomies and playing Fetch all day in a land that is eternally beautiful. Sounds perfect. Only catch is when our devoted companions are there, we can no longer physically be with them. So while they are in a place where the spirit soars, our hearts are broken as we are missing them here with us. Born on March 10, 2005, our beautiful alpha queen, pupster surrogate momma, and my daughter's and our first Siberian Husky,  turns 14½ today! You may be wondering why are we celebrating her half birthday? Because, as heartbreaking as it is, we now know she will not be here in March to celebrate her 15th Birthday as I once had hoped. Heartfelt thanks to Ann at Zoolatry for this beautiful badge. Thank you all who are sharing it and joining paws for our girl.
