#FlashbackFriday: When Dogs Have Seizures

Flashback Photo ~ Harley ~ March 10, 2018

Today's FiveSibes Flashback Friday photo is of our beautiful 14-year-old amazing alpha pack queen, Harley, pictured above from last year on her 13th birthday! Now don't tell Harley she is a senior, as she still has spunk like she's a pup! This post also covers an important topic, one very close to my heart: Seizures.

As many of you know, my now furangel Gibson, was diagnosed with idiopathic Canine Epilepsy and he became not only the face of Canine Epilepsy, but also my inspiration behind the #LiveGibStrong K-9 Epilepsy Awareness & Educational Campaign.  developed age-onset seizures when she was 12. While seizures are the same, the causes differ, and seizures in a senior dog are typically not Canine Epilepsy. Last May, I was thrilled to be asked by Hindy Pearson to write a guest blog post on her Caring for a Senior Dog website about this topic. Please check it out HERE.

This past February, I was also honored to be a guest on Hindy's Gray Paws and All podcast to discuss seizures in dogs of all ages. Tune in to the podcast HERE for this important, informative, and lively discussion on a very important topic. And shares are always welcome to help spread the word that with special care, dogs with seizures can live happy lives.

“It is amazing how much love and laughter (dogs) bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.”
~John Grogan

  1. Thanks Dorothy, it was wonderful to chat with you. I know together we can talk all day about the subjects close to our heart. I know how scary it is to have a dog with seizures (as you know), and your willingness to speak with anyone who asks for help and the incredible resources you offer have been a lifeline to so many.

  5. Harley is a beautiful dog. How blessed to have her for so long :). My dog, Bastian, is a beagle dachshund mix. He has had seizures since he was a pup. He didn't go on an medication because they were only a couple of times per year. Usually, stress induced, so he has been able to live a normal life. When he had his first seizure, we didn't have a clue what to do, but over time, we now are more aware. He usually will also come to me and lay his head on my feet and shake when one is coming on.

  6. When Roxy started having seizures, at the age of nine, it was from a brain infection :-(

  7. People often don't think about an age for a dog having seizures do they? I know I didn't.

Are some dogs more prone to this kind of behaviour, or it is a sort of lottery with most dogs missing it but the occasional one being subject to seizures and fits?

  8. Congratulations on being asked to be a guest post and for participating on the podcast. You have so much information to share about canine epilepsy.

  9. I didn't realize that there were non-epileptic seizures. I hope that Harley won't have more of them. I'll have to read the guest post!
