'Tis the Season for Greeting Cards! Recycle Those Used Stamps To Help Dogs in Need!

Christmas Flashback Moment: Wolf 2015

Shhhhh...we're strolling down a snowy Memory Lane and peeking through the Flashback window to the inside of our FiveSibes homestead at Christmastime, when our Huskies were all excited about getting and receiving holiday cards! (I always joke, but am quite serious, they received FAR more cards than us humans do!)

Flashback Friday Photo Moment: Wolf & Gib 2014

It's fond past moments like these that brings loved ones back for a brief visit. While all my FiveSibes seem to get more excited during the holidays, Gibson was our holiday Husky elf! He seemed to always enjoy sporting his jingling-jangling reindeer collar (or humoring his hu-mom!) and spreading Christmas cheer wherever he strolled!

Greeting cards are a favorite of mine. I will admit, that since the passing of my mother and Gibson three years ago, I hit the pause button on sending out greetings. In the top photo of Wolf with their many cards in their "mailbox," I will admit I still have yet to open those cards from Christmas 2015, which was one month after my Mom passed, and only two weeks after Gibson left for the Rainbow Bridge. My holiday spirit was severely under attack that year, so I took a bit of a break from sending greeting cards, but it is back in full force (thanks to my amazing family and sweet, sweet grandson) and I look forward to sending cards once again! And, I plan on sitting down with my Huskies one night with the Christmas lights all aglow, holiday carols playing, and Gibson's spirit nearby as I read those cards from Christmas past. Tears will fall, but over a smile from all those wonderful blessed moments of Christmas past.

All those cancelled stamps on your greeting cards could help other dogs around the world? They sure can! How you may ask? There are folks who engage in philately, or better known as stamp collecting, and they collect cancelled stamps to use as fundraisers!
DogTrust is one such organization based in the United Kingdom. Their "stamp lady" Jenny collects cancelled stamps and sells them to raise funds "specifically to sponsor kennels in our rehoming centres...Sponsorship provides for all food, treats, toys, veterinary bills and heating - in fact everything needed to give a dog somewhere to call 'home.'"

According to DogTrust, ANY stamps, both British & Worldwide are welcome, and she is really jolly to receiving the following:
Collections
Albums
Foreign Coins & Banknotes
First Day Covers
Presentation Packs
Jenny can also boost funds by selling postcards - old, new, wish-you-were-here, funny, pretty - anything and everything.
To donate your stamps and read how to send, visit DogTrust HERE

The United Kingdom's PDSA also collects stamps! According to PDSA.org, "We're the UK's leading veterinary charity, providing free and reduced cost vet care for pets of people in need."

To recycle your stamps by donating, and to learn more about PDSA, visit HERE.

Used stamps and postcards are welcome at Many Tears Animal Rescue, based in Wales, "We take in and rehome primarily ex-breeding dogs who are no longer required; those on "death row" in the pounds and those whose owners are no longer able to keep them. We are a unique rescue in that the majority of our dogs are ex-breeders and many have never seen the outside world before. With the help of our staff, fosterers and other volunteers we provide a special and loving environment to help all our dogs adapt and find permanent, loving new homes."

To learn more about how to donate your used holiday stamps (or any cancelled stamps), visit HERE.

Canine Partners Stamp Appeal is a program to "raise money to fund an assistance dog through their advanced training. All kinds of stamps are welcome, on or off paper. You just need to leave no more than a 5mm single thickness border around them, and the perforations should not be damaged. Any commemorative or special stamps should be sent, or handed over, separately."

For more info, visit HERE.

  1. Thanks for the reminder about saving stamps. I don't know of any other organizations. Ruby always gets more cards than the rest of the family. LOL. I also have skipped cards the least few years. Hoping to get back in the swing of things next year. Hugs!

  2. I love the idea of the stamps being used by organizations to raise money, I used to as a kid collect stamps and donated them when I stopped but cannot remember to who. I think the gift of posting cards as got lost and they are such wonderful memories, something to hold on to. A beautiful reminder of the days gone by

  5. I didn't know there was such a thing as a recycled stamp program. It's cool they use the funds to help dogs. And yes, there's just something about snail mail.

  7. Aww I love this time of year and I'm one of those folks that save Christmas cards and all greeting cards forever. I may need to rethink this idea as when I get old and grey I'll end up being a hoarder. I didn't know about the recycled stamp program either. Wow. That's great way to help animals. Happy Holidays !

  8. My partner collects stamps from my US cards to send to his friend in England who collects them for charity! This year there may not be so many, I have donated cat food to my adopted foster network Place for Cats in NYC and will only send a handful instead. I felt the cats need food and I miss my Mum anyway (she passed in March this year).

I love your snowy Husky it did make me smile though!!!

  12. My dad was an avid stamp collector, so I used to save some of the special stamps for him. (He would also mail me envelopes just to get the stamps cancelled.) I still have some stamps. It will be nice to donate them to a good cause!

  13. I was just talking to a friend today about people not sending Christmas cards anymore. I have some made of the girls to send out, but I'm in the middle of preparing to have surgery on Wednesday and the cards may be a little late.
