Why We Have Purple Pumpkins on Halloween!

Flashback Photo: Gibson, October 2015

Since Halloween is right around the corner, I thought it was perfect today to Flashback to when my Epi-Warrior, Gibson, was here and we celebrated with purple pumpkins! Why purple? As part of the Epilepsy Foundation's Purple Pumpkin Project, one of our pumpkins - Gibson's - was purple for Canine Epilepsy Awareness to get people talking about dogs living with seizures.

We continue to show Gibson's purple pumpkin in both his memory, and for our FiveSibes #LiveGibStrong K-9 Epilepsy Awareness & Education Campaign and #Paws4Purple program with Purple Day® for Epilepsy & The Anita Kaufmann Foundation to show others that these amazing dogs can live a happy life doing whatever non-Epi dogs do, and, like Gib, they love and embrace life so much, it leaves us all truly inspired.

So, how did the Purple Pumpkin Project come about? It is all credited to a boy and his father! Founder Ron Lamontagne's son who has epilepsy, was thinking about how to spread awareness for those living with epilepsy, and when he came upon a local pumpkin patch, he was inspired! Knowing November is Epilepsy Awareness Month, and that children and their families would be carving pumpkins for Halloween on October 31, he thought why not make one purple and when folks ask, "Why is your pumpkin purple?" we can all reply "For epilepsy awareness" and encourage conversations about it! In this video, also from 2015, we highlight the program as well as many beautiful Epi-dogs and their furfriends who helped us spread the word about Canine Epilepsy Awareness and showing off their purple pumpkins in support!

Now, be sure to show us your purple pumpkins! Simply visit our FiveSibes: Siberian Husky K9 News & Reviews Facebook page and post it (and your pet's name & town/country) under our pinned post for Purple Pumpkins, or DM it to me and I will share throughout the month! It may even wind up in a future awareness video!

  1. I love reading stories about kids who make such a big difference in this world. I figured the purple pumpkin was for Gibson, but I love the back story to it. Fabulous idea to go purple on Halloween, and I bet there will be a lot of people asking and learning about canine epilepsy and raising awareness.
