Today is a very special day as it is our alpha queen Harley's 10th Birthday! It's so hard to believe that a decade ago the beautiful pup named Nanuk "Harley" Mari with the intense mask and bright blue eyes came into our lives and introduced us to this wonderful, crazy, loving, howling, fun-filled amazing world of Siberian Huskies! Harley is my daughter's first dog, and not only is she our family's first Siberian Husky, but she is who kicked off the Siberian Husky Potato Chip Syndrome in our home as Gibson followed a year later, and then the three Pupsters Wolf, Chloe, and Bandit two years after Gibson and the FiveSibes were born!
Harley at 7 weeks and today!
Harley is such an amazing dog. Not only is she super smart, super fast, and full of Huskitude, she is also very sweet and can turn on the charm in an instant if it suits her. She rules the roost and commands respect from the other four, with Gibson madly in love with her since the day he came home and she body-slammed him (at four months old) into the side of our pool. Ah yes, for Gib it was love at first sight! Then when the Pupsters came along, Harley instantly became their surrogate momma teaching them respect, playfulness, and pack family love.
Birthday kisses from Mom!
Harley is a natural-born leader, always having to be at least a nose ahead on walks, or else she pulls the invisible sled as if she was in a race to be first! She is the first one out the door to the yard, but the very last one in. She loves her private "girl talk" times with my daughter and I where she will sit and animatedly watch as we chat, and then move her mouth and toss her head as if she is adding to the conversation. Only she doesn't make a sound. Unless the pack family begins their wolfsong. They will bark at her until she "sings" and then, and only then, will the rest of them join in. It's a respect ritual they have done since forever. No one sings until the queen sings. And sing she does...or at least her version of a song. See, Harley can not hold a note. It's very difficult to explain her sound, but if you've tuned in to some of our howling videos, trust me, you'll pick it out right away. A neighbor once thought one of our Huskies was badly hurt from the howls...no, they weren't hurt, it was just Harley singing. And the pack has her convinced she has a beautiful voice, so who am I to rain on her parade?
Ready for a little shopping? A little Starbarks? A chat on the iBone?
Harley loves to play hard to get, unless of course ice cream or pizza "bones" are involved. We joke that Harley does what Harley wants when Harley wants. Huskitude. Plain and simple. But when Harley comes over and kisses you, or gazes into your eyes with her beautiful baby blues, or rests her body on your foot, you know how much she loves you! While her personality may suit her name - Harley is all tough on the outside - but, when she shows you heart, you are her willing captive! For she is equal parts bad ass and lady like...but all Queen! She knew it was her birthday - as soon as the crown was on her head, she assumed the modeling position! It's only befitting a queen that her presents should include a Chewnel bag, an iBone, and, of course, a "cup" of Starbarks! Our very own fashionista!
"Harooo?" Harley answers her iBone.
A special Birthday video chat!
"Happy Birthday!" answers the FiveSibes BFF, Faith DaBaldo, in this very sweet birthday message video!
Time for cake! Nom-nom-nommmmms!
A little video of Harley's party!
Since it's also Tasty Tuesday (hosts are Sugar the Golden Retriever and Kol's Notes), we're joining in the hop with the very simple recipe for Harley's Birthday cake! (If your dog can not have dairy, check with your vet to see if you can use dairy-free coconut milk "ice cream" instead). This cake is always a Sibe crowd pleaser! Enjoy!
Because Harley had such a great day, she really wants to give away another one of my books all about her - my latest FiveSibes™ Tale Getting Healthy With Harley! So if you missed out on our Blogiversary Book Giveaway, here's another chance to get Harley's book! Good luck! And thanks for coming to our party!

FiveSibes #Flashback Photo ~ Gibson & His Purple Pumpkin ~ 2014 W oo! Or, should I say Booooo! It's that time of the year when pumpkin hunting and carving is fun thing to do! Dewclaws. Such an unnecessary evil for a dog. In August, I noticed Harley limping. At 11-and-a-half, she is a bit stiff-legged at times from arthritis, but this was a more pronounced limp and she was having an extra tough time sitting down. She seemed very uncomfortable. She was also becoming a bit snarley, especially when I was touching her paw, which is something that never typically bothers her. Upon further checking, I noticed an odd lump around her dewclaw on her right leg, thinking it was possibly a pulled dewclaw, maybe a splinter, thistle, or even a bee sting , she became extremely agitated when I touched it. (Warning: some photos may be somewhat graphic, but I am sharing for educational purposes). Oddity beneath the dew claw. Off to the vet we went. At the vet, Harley is protective of her paw by hiding it . Harley's paw was shaved and it uncovered a very large inflamed area surrounding the dewclaw and beyond, as you can see in ...
Original photo by and courtesy of Lisa Byrd; modified by FiveSibes The Rainbow Bridge must be some (p)awesome place to be for it has so many amazing, beautiful angel animals there. My beloved Gibson is there. As is my Chelsey, Sandy, kitty Smokie, bunny Sunny, my fox Ah, many horses, and so many others pets. We have many furfriends who have also crossed The Rainbow Bridge. All of these beloved animals are there...so healthy and happy, with all the dogs enjoying their zoomies and playing Fetch all day in a land that is eternally beautiful. Sounds perfect. Only catch is when our devoted companions are there, we can no longer physically be with them. So while they are in a place where the spirit soars, our hearts are broken as we are missing them here with us. It is a hurt we all as pet parents now way too well. And today, as unbelievable as it seems as I write this, we have to bid a final farewell to another dear furpal, Buddy, the Christmas Husky , who has now earned h...
Born on March 10, 2005, our beautiful alpha queen, pupster surrogate momma, and my daughter's and our first Siberian Husky, turns 14½ today! You may be wondering why are we celebrating her half birthday? Because, as heartbreaking as it is, we now know she will not be here in March to celebrate her 15th Birthday as I once had hoped. Heartfelt thanks to Ann at Zoolatry for this beautiful badge. Thank you all who are sharing it and joining paws for our girl. As amazing and strong as our queen has been, and how proud I have been of how she still could outrun Pupsters Wolf and Bandit, still splash in her pool like a puppy, tear up a dog bed like there's no tomorrow, and chase her tail until the sun sets, our beloved Husky leader has also been dealing with health issues that we have been treating, but are now slowing her down and, heartbreakingly we are preparing ourselves for her journey, that we as pet parents all dread, to the Rainbow Bridge. “Dogs' lives a...
