Inu (Dog) Loyalty Gives a Glimmer of Hope

There is so much we can learn from dogs. In our everyday lives and when something tragic hits, such as the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all--both human and animal--who have been touched by this disaster. The images are so vivid. Burned in our minds forever. We send our hopes and prayers to them.

It's hard to see the devastation and think, "what good can I take from this horror?" I can honestly say that I can not answer that. It seems there is nothing good to glean from it at all. What we can do, is focus on hope. Hope for survivors. Hope for no further eruptions. Hope for help. Hope for assistance for the pets who have been lost or hurt as a result of this to be found and reunited with their families.

So many of us have been touched by the incredible video of one lost dog, who caught the attention of a cameraman to lead him over to another dog, apparently injured or worse at first glance. The first dog refused to leave this dog's side. These two dogs symbolize hope in the very face of destruction. As one report says, you do not need to speak Japanese to understand what is happening in the video. One must watch it all the way to almost the end to understand the true depth of loyalty and caring the one dog, now called a "hero dog" has for the other dog that he consoles by placing his paw around the other's neck, offering hope in the wake of disaster.

Since this video aired, many have inquired about the welfare of these amazing dogs. There have been conflicting reports, with nothing for certain. We continue to hope that we will receive news that they have indeed been rescued and are hopefully receiving the love and attention they so deserve.

There are many ways to help out the animal victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami. Please verify your source to be sure your donations are going to the correct place for, as sad as it is, there are some shady folks who will use this tragedy to scam good-hearted and caring folks. Please check out World Vets, the Humane Society International, Global Animal, PETA, and Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support, to name just a few organizations, for more up-to-date info on what's going on and how to help.

For a video and info on the rescue in Japan, please visit the Saturday Blog Hop's hosts, Two Little Cavaliers, and Life with Dogs, and also visit Confessions of the Plume!

Paws of Hope go out to Japan, its people, their pets, and all the rescuers.

  1. I loved that you pointed out the positive rather than focusing on the negative in regards to the devastation that is continuing in Japan because there's plenty of negative to go around and we the entire world needs to see that good can come out of bad situations no matter how devastating. I have watched the featured video many times and I have to admit that the protective dog offered more comfort than anyone could have offered and it is so sweet how giving he is in his support of that wounded dog! Very sweet and hopeful post!

  2. I hope things turned out OK for those dogs. That is the rumor. It feels good to be able to do a little something. Sending money feels so inadequate, but I sent some to World Vets and am hoping it will help.

  3. It's great that we get snippets of information about these two dogs. They've certainly inspired people, both for their loyalty to each other and to their plight in this terrible tragedy. If their people can't be found, I certainly hope they will be transported to a safe area and eventually adopted.
