#RememberMeThursday: Writing to Save Lives. Plus, Let's Meet A Few Beautiful Adoptables...

Why do I blog?

That is a question many writers and bloggers are asked. For
me, I write to help educate others on the breed of the Siberian Husky, to bring awareness to dogs with Canine Epilepsy, to encourage adopting a Siberian Husky or Siberian Husky/mix from a shelter or rescue, and to share the pure enjoyment of having a dog (or five in my case) as part of the family! I write...to save lives...of Huskies in shelters who are passed by because of misinformation on the breed, have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, or are of senior age. By the power of the mighty pen, we can share important and accurate information so folks interested in adding a new furry best friend to their family can obtain the information they need in order to adopt and give the dog the best and proper care they can with all the resources needed at their fingertips.

What is the #RememberMeThursday® Awareness Movement All About?

According to RememberMeThursday.org, which falls this year on Thursday September 27th, "is a global awareness campaign uniting individuals and pet adoption organizations around the world as an unstoppable, integrated voice for orphan pets to live in forever homes, not die waiting for them." And, on this date, "the entire world will share the importance of pet adoption, and shine a light on all orphan pets waiting in shelters and rescues. In 2017, people using #RememberMeThursday reached nearly 330 million people on social media." So far, there are 180 countries participating in #RememberMeThursday and supporting adoption of orphan pets! Together, we can reach even more people!

#RememberMeThursday was created by Mike Arms, President and CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center. He also created the International Pet Adoptathon and the Home 4 The Holidays program which, according to RememberMeThursday.org is " in partnership with international animal organizations, has placed over 13 million pets in homes since 1999."

And why did Arms create #RememberMeThursday? “My heart breaks for those beautiful people working in animal welfare who are forced to take the lives of the pets they love," he states. "I believe lighting a candle for the orphan pets will be a way for people to let the world know how much they love them, and the awareness can help in increasing adoptions and decreasing euthanasia.”

According to 2013 figures from the Humane Society of the United States, “Only 30% of pets in US households come from rescue facilities.” And, a much sadder statistic is, “Of the 3 million cats and dogs euthanized in shelters each year, approximately 2.4 million (80%) are healthy and treatable and could have been adopted into new homes.”

Staggerings percentages! If we can all participate and share #RememberMeThursday on social media, maybe we can double the 330 million people we reach so we can save that many more pet lives.

“Only 30% of pets in US households come from rescue facilities. Of the 3 million cats and dogs euthanized in shelters each year, approximately 2.4 million (80%) are healthy and treatable and could have been adopted into new homes.”

~Humane Society of the United States

Speaking on the Siberian Husky breed, the number of these beautiful dogs that are being left homeless and either abandoned or dropped off at already full shelters and rescues, is at epidemic proportions. When people see these beautiful dogs with their stunning eyes on a TV show or in a movie or television ad, they want one. Without researching the breed, these dogs that have specific needs and unique traits, prove to be too much for those who did not do their homework and research the breed. So when these very active dogs (who were bred to run) are left cooped up all day without exercise, they can become destructive out of boredom and suddenly and sadly find themselves behind bars at a shelter or rescue...and that's if they are lucky. We emphasize to anyone interested in this breed of dog--and they are amazing, intelligent, wonderful dogs (I had five, now four as we lost my beloved Gibson to cancer in 2015)--to please contact a rescue or reputable Siberian Husky aficionado to get all the facts on the breed so they can determine if this dog fits their lifestyle so that when they bring one home, it will be a loving, forever home.

The more articles we write and share, the more we can shine a light on pet adoption and find forever loving homes for so many pets in need. 3. It's hard for us to believe these beautiful dogs ever end up in a shelter. Our Female Human once had a Husky in her life and she said he was the BEST canine she ever met.

  5. Aw a couple of those cuties you shared are in my area! Unfortunately I'm at my limit with 2 dogs currently. I keep going back and forth with whether or not I want to add a 3rd after we move or not. 2 seems like such a good number, but it's hard not to want more too. I imagine 5 must be a real handful!

    1. Believe it or not, after our two original ones, then the three puppies we added at once, it has been a little wild at times, but they all learned together and do everything together, including going potty and eating! It has been such an amazing and special journey with five! <3

  6. Wonderful post Dorothy! The most heartbreaking thing when I volunteered at the county shelter in Phoenix was knowing that not every dog or cat would find a home. Some would be lucky enough to be adopted by a rescue organization but many ran out of time. Will we ever become a No Kill nation? I pray that we will. I'm so sad about Huskies that are surrendered due to their unique traits. Icy was always super high energy, doggie daycamp helped tremendously but it isn't cheap. They need owners who can give them the opportunity to burn tons of energy and can deal with the shedding! Sharing.

  11. What a great post to call attention to RemembermeThursday! I'm shocked to learn that only 30% of American pet owners have their pet as a result of going to a rescue. I thought that number would be so much higher. Will be sharing this for sure!

  12. What a beautiful compilation of Huskies waiting for their forever home. I shared Skylar Blue since he's an older dog with fewer details about his life's story. Such a sweet boy! And Tails of the Tundra has some cleverly worded links at the bottom of their page detailing Siberian Husky personality traits. I completely agree with you that people need to research dog breeds to ensure that their chosen dog will fit with their life, now and years from now. If people did just a little more research and assessed their own ability to provide what that desired breed needs with a little more frankness, I think we'd see fewer dogs being surrendered. Great post to help up the education level!

    1. Thank you very much for your kind words and sharing Skyar Blue! I so agree about more research could lead to less surrendered dogs. One day...one day...

  13. So many huskies wanting a home! I will share for you and hope they get one.

30% is a wholly lamentable state of affairs. it is criminal. Shelter pets count but some people are totally stupid snobs about where their pets' come from. GRRRR

    1. I so appreciate your sharing them! And sadly, these are just a few Huskies. There are so many more in many more rescues waiting for their forever families. I always emphasize that there is nothing wrong with shelter pets other than needing a loving home!

  14. It is so important to research breeds before adopting, including cats. Many people love the intelligence and beauty of herding and running breeds, but then complain about the destruction they cause because they don't get enough exercise. Thank you for sharing so much about the Huskies.

    1. You are very welcome. I hope more folks will become more active in researching not only this breed, but all, to be sure they are the right one for their family so they will be a forever member of the family.

  15. What a great Remember Me Thursday post. Growing up, I always wanted a Husky. But realistically as an adult, we don't have the space for the beautiful breed (we have a smaller, senior dog now). Thank you for hopping along with us!

    1. Thank you very much! My daughter always wanted one as a child, and we finally had one become part of family when we knew she would properly handle the responsibliity and that the puppy would get along with our senior rescue dog...and then, as they say, the rest was history! We fell head over heels with the breed and added four more! I want to thank you for hosting this important Blog Hop!
