It's Earth Day! Help Reduce Your Dog's Carbon Pawprint!

Woo! It's Earth Day! And here at FiveSibes, I like to talk about reducing our dogs' carbon pawprint. Earth Day is a time to remember that as adults and caregivers, as well as being custodians of the animals on our planet, it's our responsibility to helping our children become good and responsible caretakers of animals and the planet both now and in the future. How? By teaching them some simple, but important tips to help reduce not only their own carbon footprint, but their dogs' carbon pawprint as well.

What is a Carbon Footprint?

According to The Nature Conservancy, it is, "The total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions."

Did You Know...?

"The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world. Globally, the average carbon footprint is closer to 4 tons!" States The Nature Conservancy, adding, "To have the best chance of avoiding a 2℃ rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop to under 2 tons by 2050."

Let that sink in...Wow! In the U.S. the average carbon footprint for ONE person is 16 TONS...and that needs to be reduced to 2 tons! While we are way more cognizant of our Earth's condition now, there is still a lot of work to do. And it does not happen over night or even inside one year. But it can be done! Notes The Nature Conservancy, "Lowering individual carbon footprints...by making small changes to our actions, like eating less meat, taking fewer connecting flights and line drying our clothes, we can start making a big difference."

Our FiveSibes Tips to Reduce Your Dog's Carbon Pawprint

(Since this is a K9 blog) To reiterate the steps outlined above in my photo featuring our alpha queen, Harley, who along with all of my FiveSibes, absolutely loved our Earth (including digging in it!), so here's some easy everyday tips we can do, and teach our future generations to do:

Walk our dogs whenever possible,  instead of going by car.

Use recycle bags when going shopping for your pet's (and your own) food and supplies.

Make your own dog's snacks whenever possible. (And they will love you for it!)

Recycle your pet food cans and containers and don't toss them in the trash.

Feed your pet in a stainless steel bowl (wash, reuse, repeat).

Plant a tree in memory of a beloved pet.

Recycle your pet's medication containers (you can check with your vet, pharmacy, even acupuncturist for their accepting them to repurpose).

Use biodegradable "doggy-do" cleanup bags.

Don't use the microwave to reheat your pet's food.

Recycle water used in your dog's pool and leftover in their water dish to water plants, trees, and shrubs in your garden.

Stitch up old dog beds and toys, give them a wash, and donate to a shelter or rescue.

SPAY/NEUTER pets to reduce the epidemic-proportions of homeless animals in overpopulated (and now struggling) shelters and rescues.

Turn off the lights, cell phones, computers, and electronics and go OUTSIDE  with your dogs. You'll conserve PLUS have some wonderful bonding time with your pet!

There's so many things we can do to help our planet! What are some things you do to help reduce your pet's carbon pawprint?
