With the arrival of Memorial Day weekend begins the unofficial start to summer...but, please let us all remember the reason for the day: to honor our fallen military members—human and K9—those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we may enjoy the freedoms we do today. Take a quiet moment and reflect on our soldiers and send out a heartfelt "thank you" before embarking upon the holiday weekend, hopefully filled with sunshine, love, friends, and family.

"As you enjoy your weekend with friends and family, we hope that you will take a moment to recognize and reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Speak their names and tell their stories with us," states Warrior Canine Connection. Warrior Canine Connection's mission "is a pioneering organization that utilizes a Mission Based Trauma Recovery (MBTR) model to help recovering Warriors reconnect with life, their families, their communities, and each other."

I am resharing this touching video highlighting some beautiful pups named after soldiers who sacrificed their all for our freedoms...

 An excerpt from:

 For the Fallen
by Laurence Binyon

"They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered:
They fell with their faces to the foe...

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them...."

The Soldier Dog
by Joe Ferra

"I was trained to use my eyes to
watch and protect you from harm.
My ears to alert you of impending
danger like an alarm.
My keen sense of smell to detect
an enemy close at bay.
Yes I was a soldier who gave my life
so you could fight another day.
So remember me as time goes by
This soldier dog so true.
For I had only one life to give
and I gave that life to you."

To all our human and K-9 veterans,
THANK YOU  for your service to our country!

While you are enjoying the day with your families and friends, please remember the following FiveSibes safety tips for your dogs...

  5. Such a beautiful post, Dorothy! I'm so glad you had spotlighted the warrior K9s we all need to remember this Memorial Day weekend. Your tips on keeping our pups safe this holiday are very valuable. Folks never seem to fully understand that taking these simple steps keeps their pups safe and avoids a tragedy. I love the Warrior Canine Connection. Such a great organization! Thanks for this post, Dorothy! I know it will be greatly appreciated by many, including me.

  7. I love the solder and the dog in silhouette, to touching and simple but so powerful. It is always worth reminding people that we lost cats and dogs in conflicts and still do.
