#NEAM: Life's a Beach for Epi-Dog "Lenny!"

Epi-Star, "Lenny"

I t's National Epilepsy Awareness Month (#NEAM) and if you follow my blog, you know it's a special month here at FiveSibes. Inspired by my beloved Gibson, who was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy shortly after his third birthday, I began the #LiveGibStrong Canine Epilepsy awareness and education initiative, and also authored the multi-award winning EPIc Dog Tales: Heartfelt Stories About Amazing Dogs Living & Life With Canine Epilepsy, a 264-page beautiful book, where I share stories of amazing Epi-dogs from across the breeds and across the world. As a follow-up to all the amazing Epi-dogs and caregivers I've met along the way, I picked up where my book left off with this annual Epi-Star series here on my blog, where I continue to feature stories about these amazing dogs who have Canine Epilepsy, but never let that stop them from loving life.

Today, I'm so pleased to shine a spotlight on my next amazing Epi-dog as part of my FiveSibes #LiveGibStrong #NEAM 3rd Annual Epi-Star Feature! Meet Greg and Becky Frank's handsome four-year-old boy, "Lenny," a mixed breed of mainly Chow, says Greg, plus some Labrador, with a few other breeds mixed in.

“Lenny was rescued by us when he was about six months old. When he was just a pup, he was abandoned in the Everglades in south Florida, by of course people with no heart. Luckily, he was found by volunteers who search areas like this. He had Parvo and survived seven weeks in the hospital.” Greg also shares that Lenny was also in “three different foster homes.” So the puppy was off to a really rough start in life.

Greg and his wife Becky recall how Lenny became a part of their family. “We were mourning the loss of one of our two dogs for quite a few months at that time, and I started to look online at rescues. I saw his story and contacted them, and that’s how we got him.”

Six months after Lenny’s adoption, he had his first seizure. “I have been around and in love with dogs before I could walk, and have never had a dog have seizures,” notes Greg. "So, we dove into what was needed, like putting out $4,100 for an MRI.”

Lenny was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and was put on medication for the seizures. “He started on Keppra, from minimum dose to maximum," recalls Greg. "When he was started on the Keppra, nothing changed, and after a month or more they doubled it. Same thing, nothing changed, so it was doubled to the max. He just wasn’t like a dog anymore. When nothing changed after three-four months, I asked if we should try something else because all that did was make him not be a dog anymore. We were told ‘No. Keep him on it, and we will add other medications as well.’ We certainly did not like that answer, so we weaned him off over next few months, and we always try to feed as healthy as possible, but went maybe the extra mile with that." Lenny was put on Phenobarbital that Greg says they keep him on a low dose, "Half, we decided to try just fifty percent of the lowest dosage the vet recommende. Honestly, we have tried everything, but with a more holistic approach, so eventually we got to MCT oil and that helped lengthen the time between seizures from maybe seven to 10 days to two to three weeks.”

There's nothing the Frank's won't do to help their boy. Greg says, "Lenny is our family and will do whatever it takes to help him."

As of writing this, Lenny has surpassed the 40-day mark of no seizures! And, that is certainly wonderfully inspiring news!

  • According to a study by Felicity Y. HanLisa Conboy-SchmidtGalena RybachukHolger A. VolkBrian ZanghiYuanlong PanKarin Borges published in the Wiley Online Library, "More recent data demonstrate that addition of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), which provide the medium chain fatty acids octanoic and decanoic acid, as well as ketone bodies as auxiliary brain energy, can be beneficial in rodent seizure models, dogs and humans with epilepsy. MCTs provide medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and ketones as auxiliary brain energy and can reduce seizures in...dogs and humans with epilepsy...MCTs are a promising adjunct to standard pharmacological treatment for both humans and dogs with epilepsy."

In pursuing holistic treatments, Greg and Becky also began Lenny on something new. “One of the things we also have been giving him is organic tripe. Tons of omegas and so good for the gut, which then helps with anxiety as well. It took some time, and I’m so excited right now that we have possibly found a combination that helps him.”

Lenny really enjoys long walks on the beach with Greg and Becky, and, "Lenny loves to chase squirrels (and sometimes our cat), but more than anything loves to see other dogs. We have puppy parties quite a bit as we have a very large backyard and invite others to come over and they all run around. He gets so excited when they come over."

How lucky for Lenny!

“Lenny might be lucky,” notes Greg, “but we are luckier to have him.”

No matter what arises, the Franks are committed to helping Lenny continue to live his best life, and not let epilepsy get in the way of that. “He’s our family, and we will do whatever it takes to help him.”

Bravo to Lenny!

And Bravo to his amazing caregivers, his hu-parents Greg and Becky!
