Make Sure Your Dog Doesn't Have a Drinking Problem! Tips For Keeping Your Dog Hydrated!

#FiveSibes Flashback Photo ~ Harley ~ August 2015

Boy, it's been some summer here in the northeast! We've had hot, humid days mixed in with frequent rain showers, which only adds to more humidity. Right now, thankfully, we are having a break with a cool spell as it is in the 60s as opposed to the 90s, but with 88% humidity, but I'm not complaining! Another whole area of the country is under a tremendous heat alert with temps in the triple digits! The mid-west and south are predicted to be 20 degrees higher than normal! We sure hope all of our friends living under this dangerous heatwave will keep cool and safe. Keep those dogs out of the heat and give them plenty of fresh, cool water to keep them hydrated.

Be sure to scroll down a bit and read my tips published in 4Knines.

 Weather From NBC News

Why they call these the dog days of summer makes no sense to this Siberian Husky momma...mine would rather have dog days of winter. (Note: I am aware that the phrase comes from the constellations--when Sirius (the dog star in the Canis Major [Orion's dog] constellation) appears in the sky during the hottest time of year--approximately late July through mid-August. (Yes, I am a fan of the stars! One of my favorite classes was Astronomy!) Of course, there are other folklore tales with different explanations, but I like the Sirius one!)

Read all about the benefits of hydrating cucumbers in my past post HERE!

And...a little more trivia...did you know July (yes, I realize that was last month, however, the heat is still here) was deemed National Pet Hydration Month by PetSafe? This was developed to bring attention to the importance of hydrating pets, especially during the hot weather months. While July has past, it's key to know the facts and be sure our dogs are kept well-hydrated all the time, paying extra attention during the hot summer months.

Interesting Facts:

So, how to cool off a northern breed dog and keep them well-hydrated in the hot summer months?

I recently wrote about this in an article published by 4Knines last month, and it's worth the quick read for some very important tips for the health of our pets, including how to make some cool hydrating treats!

I love this infographic by PetSafe.

Tell us, does your dog have a drinking problem? Or does s/he drink enough water?

And, as our Chloe always reminded all dogs from a years past Flashback...

  3. Such great info about keeping dogs hydrated. It really is important. Your photo of Chloe to remind people to replenish outside water with cool water is great! Most people don't think about outdoor water heating up. But, oh my, it can get hotter than a sauna! That's a terrific tip! I also love the cucumber tip. I never think to ask Henry's vet about cucumbers. I'll have to add it to my list for his next visit. He does LOVE veggies! Or maybe he loves them because he knows it's people food. And I have a few friends that keep telling him "you're a furry little human". That doesn't really help. But it is cute as all get out! I actually had to put out more bowls of water for Henry because he'd empty a bowl and I wouldn't notice. When I first got him, he'd flip the bowl like a top and look at me as if to say "you're slack on your service". Now, I have 4 bowls. I wash and change them daily. No more flipped bowls. I have to admit, I kind of miss the flipped bowl routine. It was hysterical! Super information and I'm sharing it with all my dog parents!

  4. Pet hydration is SO important, especially in hot weather! I love that graphic from PetSafe. We've been having horribly hot, humid here in Florida. Sometimes it's unbearable. I feel so bad for Icy, she has to be indoors most of the day due to the heat. I do my best to keep them well hydrated; Lots of cool water with bottomless water bowls, Keeping them indoors mid day, adding water to their food and feeding moist/canned food, and frozen treats that contain water or juices.
