Blog the Change: Dogs Can Live Full and Happy Lives with Canine Epilepsy

Image
Today is Blog the Change . I'd like to take this opportunity to once again talk about Canine Epilepsy Awareness . As the parent of a seven-year-old Epi-Husky, Gibson, who was diagnosed shortly after his third birthday, I believe it is so important to spread the word that Canine Epilepsy and seizures do not have to mean a death sentence for dogs. There are many dogs who have, are, and will continue to live life to the fullest even with Canine Epilepsy . We don't know how long our canine companions - both Epis and non-Epis - will bless us with their pr esence, but we can make their lives as full and happy and love-filled as we can. And, whereas once upon a time euthanasia was the suggested protocol for dogs with seizures or Canine Epilepsy, that is not the recommendation today. Today, there are so many resources and healthcare routes to explore, both medically and/or holistically and there are many treatment options available for the Epi-dog parent that just didn't ...

"Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you..."   Today is a very special day for 25 years ago the most beautiful, amazing girl was born and has filled my l ife with so much love and joy e ach and every day since - my wonderful d aughter and very best friend!  So for this edition of Flashback Friday, I'd like to dedicate it to my Birthday girl and her furbabies of yesterday a nd today! Pictured abo ve in an ode to my family's first dog that touched my daughter's life when she was just a little girl - her then best friend, (now a f ura ngel) , puppy Chelsey , who came home with us after we adopted her from our local SPCA . She spent the next 13 years always playing and watching over my daughter ...and go ing on the swing set with her! De voted love. A bove my d aughter is wit h her first baby, Harley, our first Siberian Husky on the day that, unbeknownst to us at the time, would be the kick-off of the beginning of the FiveSibes ...

A Tale of a Houdini Husky: A Thief by Any Other Name is Still Bandit

Image
A Tale of the Great Houdini Husky: So, I always say how our girl Bandit is aptly named as she is our resident th ief ... here is a perfect example! At first we were n ot sure how she did it either! Most of you now know Gibson has to be kept quiet and be on rest because of a bad cruciate, so I let him out for a time in our enclosed area on the deck and typically have one of the other Sibes keep him company. Here he is with his love Harley. Note he has a bed in the bottom photo, yet in the top he does not. Where did his bed go? How co uld it just disappear ? Bandit!!! So, wondering how she did it...we watched. Cleverly and in a stealth-like fashion...she lays down and reaches her pa w through under the deck rail and st ead ily scratches and paws until she catches a small piece then keeps pulling until she has a good grip and then drags the bed under the rail! A very clever "th ief" indeed!

Happy 7th Birthday, Gibson!

Image
Today is Gibson's 7th Birthday! Such a special day as we celebrate having this sweet, gentle, beautiful boy in our lives! I can't believe it's been seven years since I picked up the four month old wooly fluff ball with the clown shaped eyebrow mask who fell madly in love with our Harley the moment he stepped paws into our house! Even through all the trials of becoming an epileptic at age three, and now his torn cruciate (see full story in this past Friday Flashback blog post ), this boy is a fighter at heart ; a real warrior and I admire and love him so. Gibbie, here's to many, many, many more happy birthdays together! Today began with the wearing of some Birthday gear:  "Seriously, M om, a hat at my age??!! I am 7 after all!"  Baking up so me peanut b utter treats with our  ne w t reat maker...Gib waited pati ently, as  Wolf and Bandit "helped." "Let's get this party started!"   "Woooooo...

Flashback Friday #16: Wooly Sibe Gibson Steals My Heart

Image
Since Gibson's 7th Birthday is in just two days...January 6th...I thought today's Flashback Friday should be of him as a pup. Here he is at four months old shortly after he joined our family. He is just the sweetest, kindest, most loving canine companion who seems like "an old soul." He is one tough pup too.       Diagnosed with Canine Epilepsy shortly after he turned three, and a resulting low thyroid disorder, which are being treated and managed , h e has also had a weak hind end and bouts of ataxia as a result of the meds, but has been having K-Las er maintenance treatments to help. A few months back he suffered from Bromide toxicity due to the pharmaceutical company's reformulation of one of his Epi-meds, and  became severely ataxic, but luc kily w ith the guid ance of our vet, he rebounded from that.       N ow, he has damaged his right rear cruciate ligament and has been lame in his hind right leg for the past several ...
