#FiveSibes Fourth of July Safety Tips & ASPCA Celebrates "ID Your Pet Day" With an #IDsPlease Summer #Giveaway!

Today is July 1st - the ASPCA's "ID Your Pet Day" and we are joining in their "ID's, Please!" to help raise awareness about the importance of tagging pets with a personalized ID with the pet's current information, as well as having pets microchipped (and if your pet already has a microchip implanted, please be sure the information on file is current).

"This holiday is especially timely as it's just a few days prior to July 4th - the time of year when many pets go missing due to fireworks and other loud noises." ~ASPCA

Speaking of July 4th, our U.S. celebration of Independence Day, America's Birthday, we do so enjoy many holiday traditions, such as parades, BBQs, picnics, pool parties, and watching fireworks displays. But, along with all these wonderful summer-loving events, extra caution and care is required with our pets to ensure their safety and happiness as well. Topping the list is fireworks. While they can be amazing and exciting for us to watch, there are a lot of pets who do not enjoy them. Fireworks can cause fright, anxiety, and stress for many animals. Keep an eye on pets around hot grilles, candles, and watch those open pools! And let's not forget about food! As with many holidays, there is usually lots of delicious human food around. But, as we all know, not everything we eat is safe for our pets to eat. So part of today's FiveSibes Flashback Friday post is this graphic with a patriotic photo of Wolf taken a few years ago, with a few friendly tips to help pets and their humans have a safe, happy, and fun Fourth of July:

Another key item is to download the ASPCA's free mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. The ASPCA app, "shows pet parents exactly what to do in case of a natural disaster. It also allows pet owners to store vital medical records, and provides information on making life-saving decisions during natural disasters."

The ASPCA mobile app allows pet parents to:
  • Access critical advice on what to do with your pet before, during, and after a major storm—even if there’s no data connectivity.
  • Store and manage your pet’s critical health records.
  • Receive a personalized missing pet recovery kit, including step-by-step instructions on how to search for a lost animal in a variety of circumstances.
  • Build a lost pet digital flyer that can be shared instantly on your social media channels.
  • Get the latest and most relevant news about pets and animal welfare.

Check out the ASPCA's "IDs, Please!" graphic, and share with others to help bring awareness to many more households this holiday to help keep pets safe and happy all summer long!

  1. microchipped, the other 2 have collars. my dog breeder is against microchips, which is why i did not microchip the 2 younger girls. she would have gotten very upset with me. one of her dogs that she sold died b/c the microchip became dislodged.

  2. All nine of our dogs wear two different types of ID tags plus they're all microchipped. Each year at their annual exam, we check the chips to be sure they haven't migrated.

  3. I'm both microchipped and have an id collar! On my id collar I have the phrase "I'm Chipped" to inform people that I'm chipped.

  6. It's just amazing how many clients I mean, who, when I ask them where they got their dog, I learned they have found them during the Fourth of July weekend. So many just don't know what to do when the fireworks start and are scared and therefore just run off. Thank you so much for sharing this post!

  7. Great tips and Layla is both chipped and has a tag with two numbers on, mine in San Francisco and my friend's in Los Angeles so she is covered

  10. All our fur babies are chipped and we never leave them home alone on the fourth. Ruby doesn't seem bothered by fireworks, but again, I think that's because we stay home with her.

  13. Great tips!

Ginger always wears her ID tags, and she also has a microchip.

I have picked up lost dogs off the street in the past.... Always SO much easier to get the pet back home when he has proper tags or a microchip!

  16. I cringed when I saw the first Facebook post about a dog that had been scared and ran off during a fireworks display. It was Canada Day yesterday and someone thought it would be a good idea to take their dog to the fireworks!? I hope the dog was chipped and tagged.

  20. Great advice. Unfortunately, Truffle and Brulee aren't ID'd yet. They don't wear collars because of the tangled mess in their fur and for potential health reasons, they are not microchipped.

  21. I need to be better about switching the ID tags onto my dogs' collars.
